Gimp would be worth a try because it is an open source software (free) that appears to do about anything that photoshop will do.

    Re: Photo program need

did u doublecheck the zoom of the new picture? perhaps acdsee automatically reduced the zoom, so it appears to not have changed.

anyways, a program i recommend is xnview. if u just need to quickly resize a pic, try JPEG Resizer or Resize (download link; works for jpeg and bmp).

The image viewer I Love best is (free) XnView. It is far better than the three commercial viewers I've used (including ACDSee). I don't use the editing features, just use it for file viewing and occasional batch conversion, but I have no doubt that it can do what you want!

I agree with Ronjor, FastStone Viewer is great. But I guess all of this is subjective, depending on what one needs.

Perhaps I am not totally understanding but here are a few comments.

    1. Zooming a image changes how you view a file or how the file is displayed for your benefit. Zooming is not changing the content of the original file.

    2. When viewing the image in an zoomed situation, you should be able to use a screen capture program (such as Gadwin PrintScreen) and capture the large size image.

    3. If you want to change the size of an image, most any of the image editing programs provide this capability.

For example, the program "PhotoFiltre" has a function whereby you click on "Tools" and choose "Image Size" and there you can increase or decrease the size of the image. Save the changes in a new file name and you can see the difference when comparing the two images.

I am not referring to any use of the view function--I am talking about an editing function whereby you make actual changes to the image being edited.

I just tried Hoversnap, xnview, and faststone and they are all excellent programs.

I have ACDsee and Adobe Photoshop Elements 4 and the freeware programs will do everything that I use my commercial programs for.

    Thanks

When it comes to the free photo programs, my vote goes to Google's Picasa2... While it doesn't have 'really serious' editing functions, it will do lots of everyday jobs.

Picasa's user-interface is completely different than any other and I find it the most friendly of them all.

I would second that pvsurfer, I have used Picasa for quite a while now and would hate to be without it.
It automatically timelines all your photos and one of the edit buttons has the wonderful name of "I'm feeling lucky"!

I was going to let it pass, but I guess I will never change...

    Fastone:
Is supposed to be very good, I've never tried it. It is widely believed that they encluded a feature that intentionally caused system corruption if a serial number was used that people who had cracked the program circulated. While they have every right to defend their program, they do not have the right to harm people's computers.

    ACDSee:
Once the leading edge in file viewing, now considered to be quite slow and bloated. They had the artistic community in an uproar by including code that was somehow supposed to censor pornography. I know that sounds weird, and unbelievable...but I'm pretty sure it's true. Anyway I used version 4 but it was not very stable.

You can choose what you want, but I'm pretty sure XnView is the best. Many people who should know use it. (not including me!)

BTW- A juicy tidbit for Snag-it users. You can change the setting call "scaling" and it will automatically change the image capture size to one of the preset factor's (25, 50, 75, 200, 300, 400%) while I don't see how this would improve a lossless format save, I think if you are saving to jpeg, it actually improves over saving, then resizing.

    Hi HandsOff,
o_O Why would it need to be cracked, since it's entirely free for personal use.
I wonder where you've read that info.
I've been using FS since a long time now and it works great.
Even gave them a little gift to support the development of their software, and in return I received a lifetime license key.

I also used XNView and although it offers a lot, I stick to FS and IrfanView. :)

Thanks for the SnagIt's tip. ;)

As mentioned in my previous reply, Picasa2 has been my freeware photo organizer/editing program of choice for quite some time.

Well Picasa is really cool, but wanting to go beyond its basic editing functions, I just downloaded and installed another freeware product called PhotoFiltre. While its photo organizer falls short of Picasa's, its editing functions and special effects (filters) are awesome!

    Re: Photo program need

Zooming is not resizing RW. It is simply viewing the pic closer. Most graphics apps will have a resize function under edit/image. Certainly Irfanview, Photofiltre, Paint.net and the Gimp do. Do you have Microsoft Office? Because the Picture Manager in there also resizes. Zooming and resaving will do nothing as you have not actually changed the image size....you've simply moved closer (so to speak). resizing up from smaller to bigger will lose quality too.
    HTH,
    Brad.

Not that I am driven to defend the eminence of XnView but it also has some optional plugins that extend its capability for those who are not using a dedicated editing program such as Adobe Photoshop or JASC (corel?) Paintshop Pro. The one's I know of off hand are Harry's Filters, and red eye correction. This is confusig but try this:

I've never tried Harry's Filters but I do use some of his other filters and they are very interesting and fun. I assume they include a lot of special effects and color manipulation stuff. Fun stuff!

My appologies to the good name of FastStone! I got my wires crossed! I was thinking of Firehand and not FastStone! I guess since they are both graphics programs and both start with F and are made by combining two words there was enough similarity to confuse me. Anyway, I'm glad you pointed that out. I try not to badmouth products as a general rule, but what Fire hand did was an outrage! They purposely included a virus-like element that was designed specifically to disable computers of people who they believed were using a cracked version. I read about it on the net and made a reference to it here at Wilders only to find that Technodrome had already addressed the issue in this thread:

    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=3572

Anyways, while reviewing all this I came across the part that I found...well, hillarious. It is basically the logo, and presumably the Motto of Firehand. Check it out!

P.S. Does Fastone include PSD (photoshop format) support (as does XnView) I remember now that I was impressed with what I read but could not determine if that format was supported. This is NOT a trivial issue since adobe has chosen to remove embedded thumbnail support from within Windows Explorer - Possibly to develope a market for present and future viewers and albums of their own.

This may interest you: A company called DMMD had been incorporating a resizing algorythm called Aqua2 into a couple of it's products. it's not quite fully developed in "Pictura" and is a component of "Visere". This will only be of interest if you have a continuing need to resize pictures a lot, and especially if they are pictures of art. enlarging always amounts to getting a somewhat degraded (though bigger) image. different methods are better for different things. for portraits and art, I, personally like aqua2 better then the other methods I've seen.

    Apologies accepted HandsOff. ;)
Thanks for pointing out to the Firehand problems.
It's indeed an outrage that they dare include a trojan. :thumbd:
Indeed PSD is supported by FSI and many other formats too.

Last time I checked out FSIV, I couldn't find a clone stamp (or any similar tool) and I didn't find its overall editing tools comparable to those of PF.
