This may be old news, but wondering if anyone has information on Extendia AntiVirus, which is being sold here in the states by W*l-M*rt in their "cheapo" software racks for 7.88.

Specifically, the scan engine, and similarities to AVK Pro--if any.

FYI: the copyright dates on the cd are up to 2003, so it looks pretty new.

    TIA

Is there any indication as for how long they will update? I remember that there were cheap packages of AVK available which included an update period of only a few weeks...

I guess it would be a good idea to check this...besides the scan engine should be the same as AVK.

    Karl,

According to the packaging I saw, purchase and registration includes 1 year of pattern updates. :doubt:

Well, if explicitly stated...the package should be fine then. I don't know whether extendia uses the KAV and the RAV engine, but even with only the KAV engine it would be a good buy at this price with 1 year of updates...maybe you're just lucky :)

Well, curiosity got the better of me and I shelled out the 7.88. :D

FYI: This is the second W*l-M*rt I've seen this software in. The copyright is Boomerang Software 2002, 2003, and apparently the software is also available online at

    www.valusoft.com

This is version 11.0.4 of eXtendia AVK, with the KAV engine, and from what I've seen so far, it looks great.

*Functionality is pretty much identical to the German version of AVK Pro which I trialed, and similar interface. No RAV engine, obviously.

*One year of "gold" level (daily) database updates are included w/purchase.

*Quarantine, manual delete, right-click manual scan, scheduled scans, scheduled pattern auto-update, Exchange and Outlook plug-in support included.

    *ACE, ARJ,CAB,LHI,RAR,ZIP scan-ability.

    *Looks fully-functional to me--nothing crippled.

    Wow! What a deal! :D

hey, that's really cheap...esp. the gold level support...if I remember correctly it costs quite some $$ normally...
and the scan engine is not the latest v12, but to be honest, I don't see any difference between them, as the KAV engine is integrated into the bases anyway.

Congratulations on your good buy :).

The info tab says eXtendia AVK 11.0.4.
Would that make it the 11.0.4 version Kaspersy engine?
If so,that's the most recent Kaspersky engine that I have seen in a KAV "knock off" program.
(eScan Pro used an AVK 10 version).

Outlook Express mail account is detected automatically during setup.
That's in the Email Virus Blocker.

I found it for $7.72 at a W*lM**t SuperStore too.
I can't find anything wrong with it so far.
    The updates work.
It's not KAV,but the scanner is very good!
    What's the "catch"?
This program is definitely worth more than the $!

I wonder what the renewal terms wil be?

    11.0.4 is program version!

AVK uses different numbers for engines.

eScan uses AVKs v10 kernal not engines( but they use kav engines too).

    Current engine(s) version:
    KAV 12.0.456
    RAV 12.0.138

    Program version is 11.0.4

    Hi Technodrome.

    I see what you mean.

I have a screenshot of the program that I bought.
It's not the Pro version,so it only has one engine.
Maybe this is the same Kaspersky engine and kernel as used in the Pro version?

I hope that this isn't too stupid a question,
    Could you explain the kernel?
Isn't that installed into a system's memory by the antivirus program?

Kernel is the foundation or structure of one program. eScan uses AVKs version 10 kernel. GUI, some features etc...

Well I installed it a couple of hours ago. So far I ran manual scan. Set up a scheduled scan to see if it works, it does. ;) The scan took about as long as NAV 2003. That's ok with me. I like the way it looks. Easy to configure. The only thing I miss, sort of, is the outgoing e-mail scanner that NAV 2003 has. I guess I can get over that. I'll give it a long test drive and see how it goes. So far I like it. :D

    I didn't find it on WM's website.

The software is (usually) located in WM's wire "cheap software" racks along with the usual 2-3 year old games like FIFA Soccer, etc. Look for it in a shrink-wrapped jewelcase--no box.

www.valusoft.com has a photo of the packaging.

    HTH :)

A little update on my experience with Extendia AVK.

I've been running it now for three full days. Aside from a slight hit in system performance, some times pages load a little slower than they did when running NAV, everything is running nicely.

Only thing that concerns me is the lack of documentation and possibly tech support. No where on the software does it show when your virus update subscription ends. I went to www.extendiaAVK.com, but the link to explane how to renew the subscription is dead. I sent off an e-mail to their sales dept., 07/18/03. Hopefully I will get an reply next week. There is a link to FAQ, but the page is blank.

That's it so far. I'll just have to wait till next week to see what happens.
