Anyone have any good ways to destroy cd-r disks? Is just simply smashing them with a hammer the best way to go? It would be nice if there is some way to overwrite them first though but I don't know how because they are cd-r and not cd-rw. Thanks for any help.

I take a cissor or a knife and I cut them like crazy so it will become unreadeable...that's enough for me .. smashing with some hammer/axe would be good too I guess :D

You can buy a paper shredder. Most can shred CDs these days.

What I would do is scratch the hell out of the cd with a nail or screw driver and then sandpaper it well. Then I would only nuke the cd in a OLD microwave, that no one uses to cook food in anymore, but if I couldn't find one, I would heat up the disk with a blowtorch or other fire source, to destroy the organic dye in the disk. Be careful when cooking the plastic parts because it could be toxic to inhale the fumes. Then the fun part, take an old blender and toss the remaining cd into it, at high speed of course. ;) Next take the pieces, if there are any, and dump them in various places. Maybe some in your trash, different bags. Some in the trash barrel in front of the local store on your way to work. Some at work etc....Don't be afraid to spread the pieces out over as wide an area as possible, so recovery would be nearly impossible. ;) :D

LOL ... this response is a classic :D
My personal method is what tazdevl suggested ... multi-purpose shredder. :ninja:

    Microwave is ok. :)

Or if you are really serious you can try some of these, preferably all combined: http://www.channel4.com/science/microsites/D/demolitionday/destruction.html I would go with the Wrecking Ball first (let it drop a few times on the CD), then proceed with the Impact Breaker on the pieces (gives you more precision than the Wrecking Ball so I it should be ok for the smaller pieces). Then grab the splinters and cut them with the PDIS Steel Shears. Then go with the Pulverizer and the MH21 Grapple on the remains. You should probably burn the place after. :D

I just snap them in half and they just disintegrate, no way to recover data then. DVD's are a little tougher but they break into a thousand pieces also. ;)

For that very reason I bought Ashampoo Burning Suite 5 which keeps updating/adding to a CD-R an when you're finished with it instead of not being able to use it, you can erase and re-use again and again. The program works very well, also supports Blue Ray now. If you go to their site www.ashampoo.com you can actually put a bid in on what ever software you want, so you can get the software much cheaper than regular price. I ended paying $18.00 for mine. So far that's the only program I've seen that has that neat little feature. When you have to discard all those disk's that add's up to a lot of money. Rilla927

And i can't agree more, buy a +/- 25$ paper schredder, or a small CD-R schredder, these are designed for this and about the same price.

    That works great !

I received this page from a customer of me ( i guess not so serious),
you can throw a few thousand of DVD's CDR-W's etc. in those
things a minute, and it schred those to small 0,0001 inch pieces.

For me it is not clear, if you need watercooling for these things.

And i am not sure if these are a good brand or not,
    the language is probably Dutch.

For the serious users there is an alternative,
i can understand, for us who are a bit paranoia regarding
Computer Security, those that visit this kind of forums,
that the backup cdroms will stack up fast, for this there is a better one....

It can be placed everywhere even on a balcony,
but i recommend to offer free usage to your neighbours
