Looks like Fortinet is continuing to do well. How did Coranti do so well since they went under on Dec. 31, 2012? Is Coranti still being updated?

Ok so everybody is now going to install norman because of this.?
These testing organisations have the end users by the short and curlies.
Ive said it before and i shall say it again these tests are pure marketing FUD and im not interested in them one bit.

I wonder how Avira manages to do so well at Detection tests,
not just at VB100 but also at AVComparatives and others.

but if MRG is to be believed Avast, Emsisoft has better detections (0-day) than Avira.

I don't take tests too serious but its nice to see a company improve their product. I wish the best for Norman and hope this is an very minor indicator of overall improvements.

Just a word of caution: this test, like all the other VB tests, is still on-demand only (= no execution of the samples).

I mean, exactly. I think more and more products are moving to protection-only mode (as opposed to detection), at least with the new engines/techniques like dyna, behavior etc.

Also, it makes it much much harder (= more expensive) for the bad guys to counterfight this as making sure their samples go undetected by actually having to run them through each AV is way more problematic (especially if cloud scanning is involved) than just using something like VirusTotal.

:D Fortinet now better than Avira Pro and Bitdefender, https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showpost.php?p=2186662&postcount=186 The "improvements" of Fortinet in the last two years is spectacular IMO, not using an AV myself. Avast 8 with new sandbox = better than Fortinet in my little honeypot tests (real world experience testing by reputable test laboraties will show these 'on execute' improvements of Avast later this year).

To put it boldly: I think small sample test which are repeated on a frequent base are not that far off from reputable tests, see for instance bad Panda performance on fresh samples while they claim to be industry leaders on that aspect: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showpost.php?p=2176109&postcount=98

My thoughts exactly. With connection of all the detection systems they can't ever be sure that your systems in the lab won't pick it up after few minutes when being released ITW. Especially the Evo-Gen and upcoming "Dyna-gen".
The core logic is in your labs and because of that they have a very hard task of evading it since there is no easy way of checking how it works.

Look at the time of this post 07:50 PM Scanner found 17, REP+Sandbox 30

Despite Bitdefender track record of 2012, mark my words, Avast end up no 1 of 2014 and Fortinet no 2 :D (at least among free AV's)

maybe avast and emisosft (bitdefender) are just a bit faster than avira in updating its database and avira has a stronger heuristic and manages to block many exploits as well just with the file guard.

I am surprised that VB stil runs this test. It is about as irrelevant as it gets.

"For each product entered for a review, we measure detection using our standard on-demand scanning procedure; this uses default product settings and ignores detections labelled as 'suspicious' only."
