    dialers (porn, etc.)

    Hi.

Could someone please describe how one might know whether they could have a "dialer" BEFORE they get their phone bill? Wouldn't one know that their ISP connection's being dropped and some porn number, e.g., is being dialed as it's happening? Would you know that a dialer is being installed (e.g., given the choice to install like with RealPlayer or Flash)?

    Thanks.

    dialer.exe

Hi again. Sorry to the moderators for seeing my name so many times today; you've helped a lot, so I was hoping to get even more help.

I have a file c:\WINDOWS\Dialer.exe. Should I be concerned? I will send another hijackthis log and the file (if I can) if you'd like.

    Thanks.

    Hi username,

I have merged your last two posts together as they are related to the same question regarding dialers and dialer.exe.

You also have another thread in this forum where Unzy has given you instructions to follow but you have not yet posted back a new hijackthis log for him to check: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=34467

If you feel your above problem may still be related to your previous one, we can merge these threads together so they will be all in one place, which will make helping you alot easier for the Experts.

Please do not start a new topic until the current problems are solved. Thank you.

    Regards,

    snap

Just a quick answer about C:\WINDOWS\Dialer.exe
That's a legitimate 98 file. It is Windows Phone Dialer.

    Hi Snap.

Unzy responded to another issue which I had included my hijackthis log to prior to unzy's response (for that issue). I have yet to get a response to the dialer question(s). Thanks for yours! BTW - this forum's for open dialogue between members to share experiences and insights, right? (i.e., general questions re: issues are welcome?)

    Thank you!

    Hi username,

You posted close to the same time as Mosaic1 did to answer your question about the dialer.exe. You can navigate to the file and right-click on it and check it's properties if you like, and it should say that it is a Microsoft file.

Absolutely. :) Any questions you may have or wish to discuss, please start a new topic in the appropriate forums. ;)

Your Hijackthis shows one item that needs to be removed.

Go to Add/Remove Programs and try and remove the New.Net.

If it is not there, then follow the steps listed under Procedure4 for downloading and running the New.Net Removal tool: http://www.newdotnet.com/#remove

Then with only Hijackthis open, place a check beside the following item.
Make sure you have ALL browsers and any open windows closed (except Hijackthis) and click *Fix checked.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [New.net Startup] rundll32 C:\WINDOWS\NEWDOT~1.DLL,NewDotNetStartup

    Then reboot your computer.

    Regards,

    snap

    Hey again, snap.

Thanks for the cue. I just ran hijackthis, pasted and moved on without seeing the hijack.

It seems that I am finding things regularly any more. I run adaware, spybot, spywareblaster, zonealarm pro, and norton antivirus and this stuff keeps getting past it (or something's been there that's not been detected and keeps resulting in problems). Any ideas? Is there anything else I could send you or check for myself that might reveal what's up?

    danke

    Hi username,

You have not posted another hijackthis log here for me to check, so from what you said above "I just ran hijackthis, pasted and moved on without seeing the hijack." I'll guess that you meant your last scan with Hijackthis was clean?

Your IE's security settings may not be as tight as they should be for some sites you surf to. You could probably narrow down what sites are infecting you by just doing a scan with your security apps after visiting the one's you frequent the most.

This page will also give you a good start for tightening your security and keeping your computer clean:

    hi snap.

i was referring to the log you'd already checked. sorry about the crossed signal.

here's one for you. yet more trash being placed on my machine, it seems...

since .dat is not a valid file extension, i'll wait for you to request that i send the file to analyze. it's called hplk.dat and is trying to access 213.254.243.5:port 8090. what is that? it's in my /WINDOWS/TEMP directory.

    Hi username,

Actually .dat files are valid window files, but of course this one is suspicious since it is running from the Temp folder and trying to contact an IP that is listed in IE-Spyad's Restricted Sites Zone list.

Analysing files is not my expertise, but you can submit it to Pieter Arntz for analysis. You will find his email addy in his Profile, Here (scroll down and look under Additional Information)
Please include a brief message and a link back to this thread in the body of the email so he will be able to find it easily.

Then empty the contents of your Temp folder. If the file is in use, you may have to go off line and remove it in safe mode.
How to start the computer in Safe mode.

    Regards,

    and yet another...

there is something seriously wrong it seems. my security settings on IE are high, i'm running a firewall and 5 different sdcanning/blocking codes and it seems that i'm getting more problems thatn i was even 1 week ago. e.g.

cdgo.dat using winwildapp.exe to access the internet, 128.138.240.1:DNS. these .dat files are all trying to access the internet for the first time, too. it is also on WINDOWS/TEMP. it came up when i went to the newdot site to try to get rid of a newdot hijack.

i ran spybot and hjthis again and my log was the same as the log you saw previously. so, i tried to dump newdot with hjthis to no avail, hence the visit to newdot when this dat file and winwildapp were immediately installed!!!!!!!

    more ideas?!?! thanks!

Please be cautious when removing the New.Net because if it is removed wrong, you could lose your internet connection. That is why I posted the above link to kephyr since it explains it with a bit more detail, and also why you should use New.Net's own uninstaller so it is safely removed.

You can include the other files you mentioned (cdgo.dat and winwildapp.exe) in the zip file to submit to Pieter for analysis.

Also, could you please post another hijackthis log here, just so we can check it to see if there is anything else running. In the meantime, I will ask Pieter or one of our other Experts to look at the log too. :)

    Regards,

    snap

    winwildapp.exe is a part of http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=TROJ_STILEN.A&VSect=T

so do this Run an online antivirus check from at least one and preferably 2 of the following sites
    http://security.symantec.com/default.asp?
    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
    http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/
    http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/
    http://www3.ca.com/virusinfo/

    then
Download and unzip or install these programs/applications if you haven't already got them. If you have them, then make sure they are updated and configured as described

    Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de
    AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

    Run Sybot S&D

After installing, first press Online, press search for updates, then tick the updates it finds, then press download updates. Beside the download button is a little down pointed arrow, select one of the servers listed. If it doesn't work or you get an error message then try a different server

Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, press 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

    then reboot &

    Run ADAWARE

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
the current ref file should read at least 01R312 30.05.2004 or a higher number/later date

    Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

    then......

click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

    then.........

go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........"Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries.

    reboot again

then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

and Read here https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=27971 for info on how to tighten your security settings and how to help prevent future attacks.

& go here, click Scan for updates in the main frame, and download and install all CRITICAL updates recommended.

    hello snap.

i wasn't implying anything (on the thread that lowwatermark seems to have closed so i couldn't respond there). i was explicitly wondering how i know i can trust your advice (and the sites i'm referred to and the codes that are suggested i place on my machine from them). that seems pretty legit to me. no hard feelings, just a question. i do not know you. when i went to newdot, i immediately got a couple of things dumped onto my computer, not to mention that it also provided another piece of software for me to download without any way of my knowing whether it's legit stuff. i'd guess you would want to know the same things.

thanks for your help. i appreciate you're there on a voluntary basis. does that mean that i am not allowed to ask how i know what to trust (e.g., when i visit a site that you recommend when, concurrently, some odd stuff seems to have been dumped onto my machine)? i'm a neophyte and just hoping for some help. thanks again for all of yours.
