I know, and one of the neatest aspects is to be able to take a snapshot of a crashed system, restore into an older snapshot to recover and then reach into the crashed system snapshot and retrieve files.

    I have two new qwestions...
Q1- Whenever I install a new program, it tells me to shut down all other running applications. Should I or shouldn't I shut down Rollback's stuff that's running (Rollback.clnt & shdserv)?

Q2- Does anyone know what shdserv is for? (It seems to be a server of some sort. If so, I wonder what its mission in life might be?)

    aloha... bellgamin

Q1. All I've ever shutdown when I install and uninstall is to disable KAV and sometimes I'll disable regdefend and appdefend to stop popup's.

When I take snapshots I just close any apps that I've been using. I essentially have my system just like it was when it finished booting.

Q2. I think the serv in shdserv may stand for service. There is a shdserv Service running. I checked with Port Explorer, and it doesn't even show up as using any internal ports for communicating with itself.

Concerning Shdser.exe, if I am not mistaking it is the service that makes the defragmentation and the optimization of snapshots.

    Best regards,

It could possibly be to do with scheduled snapshots if any are set.

    Hi TonyW,

Here's what a representant from there chat live support have given me concerning shdserv.exe :

"SHDSERV.exe: Rollback has a hard-coded scheduler to defrag the current snapshot every hour. It should only take about 20 to 30 seconds on fairly new system. It will keep the system performance to optimum."

    Hope it answers your questions,

Interesting, Atomas. Thanx. I just wonder why, having defragged a snapshot once, R-back should continue to do so every hour?

Apparently it keeps the system performance to an optimum and it takes only a few seconds on some snapshots.
