Do any of you know on-demand scanners from reputable AV companies that don't run in the background? I'm not talking about those ad-detectors.

Because that's what available now. It doesn't matter for me if a smartphone can play HD videos or wi-fi tethering or firing laser beams, I still use those phones like I have been doing since, what... 2005? If it wasn't because of that stupid pop-port, I would've been staying with my old Sony Ericsson phone.

And yes, I'm aware that Nokia still release feature phones. But no, I've banned Nokia out of my life because they killed Symbian and nearly all Nokia phones in our possessions are broken. >=V

That's what I was going to ask.. That's like buying a Kindle, and using it as a doorstop.. I am unsure of the purpose of totally neutering a product beyond reasonable levels of capability.

Also, to the guy recommending DrWebLight without anything on - what's the point if you don't have realtime protection from compromised apps? MBAM has their own database, and it's growing by the day, they didn't purchase an existing Android database because they want to have control over it themselves. Given how new the product is, I would assume it would be better at grabbing the newer, more relevant threats rather than old, dried up has-been threats. Which may be why in my tests MBAM was the best at snagging ultra-new threats, while other products were not so good at that.

You might opt to have an AV to keep malware from being passed onto Windows users. But I have never seen a malware problem either on my Mac or on Linux. :thumb:

Security through obscurity. With less than 1.25% of the world using Linux, and only about 5% using Mac, you WOULD expect a much lower threat matrix. That stands to reason, and is entirely expected. Also with AndroidOS accounting for 80% of the world mobile sales in 2013, and iOS only 13%, you'd also expect a lower threat matrix on iOS.

I specifically asked for an on-demand scanners, because I find real-time protection more than likely an unnecessary waste of resources if you just stick to Google Play. If MBAM offers that like in their desktop versions, I'm willing to use it.

Thanks Sampei Nihira, just what I was looking for.

It's been my experience from using a number of different Android antiviruses that usually they don't have any noticeable impact on performance or battery life. But, I certainly do agree that you can live without realtime protection on Android.

Is adfree for rooted devices only?

Another question...Can Adblock Plus be used to block ads when on 4G? Because I get the error to configure the proxy??

Does anybody know a decent on-demand cleaner for Android? Such a cleaner that can be tuned not to have anything resident - process or service.

Agreed. Google Store, AmazonApps, are no guarantee of non-malicious apps. In fact i just installed Dr.Web on a clients tablet. 100% of his stuff was through the filtered/moderated KindleApp store.. Guess what? 2 Trojans on his tablet. Anyone saying this isn't necessary probably lacks experience in the field. No offense intended.

I agree though, Eset is a boss for Mobile, but not free unless you want to manually update it. (and most people don't)

Are you certain that they were actual trojans and not just adware?

On my first Android phone, within a few weeks of owning it, I had installed over 200 apps from Google's Market/Play Store, and nothing malicious was installed.

Neither is using an AV. The probability is low enough not to require real-time protection using up resources.

Wow! Paranoid much? Security apps for android are just a huge source of wakelocks. They're useless at best.

Re: What is your security setup these days for Android?

    That's some terrible advice.

I have yet to run into an Android device that didn't have a trojan or two, or at the very least, many pieces of adware. In fact my son just installed an App from Kindle Store (Drawing program) that was littered with Adware. Without a reasonable AV/Protection profile those would have run rampant on his Kindle.

I consider Android protection paramount, but that's based on experience with close to 300 devices over the last couple of years. Take it or leave it.
