I don't get why they can't offer mirrors from respectable download sites if the server speed is supposedly such a problem.

Anon - Is "Online Essentials" required? One thing I like about Avira is that you don't need to register with them, set up an account, and use their web site to "maintain" installations on your PCs. I am hoping "Online Essentials" is not mandatory.

not that i've seen - it only asks you to register an account to enable facebook protection for kids.

AFAIK, Avira Online Essentials is not mandatory.

    Avira HIPS ?

I am using Avira Antivirus Suite and understood that it had a firewall, as advertised, but actually it has no firewall, just uses the Windows 7 firewall. I'm not very happy but can live with it for a while because I can dig out my old PC Tools Firewall and use them in combination. A couple of questions please -

    1. Does Avira Antivirus Suite have a HIPS included? I cannot see any evidence of it as a distinct process monitor in the latest version.

    2. If it has HIPS then I guess it may possibly conflict with the ESP function in PCT FW. ESP seems to be a light HIPS and has three levels of settings within it and I want to set it at the right level to avoid conflicts according to whether Avira paid AV has HIPS or not.

If anyone can answer either question, or even has experience of these two products, any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

    Re: Avira HIPS ?

I believe you can enable two way firewall control of the windows firewall through Avira.

Wanted to try it, but the installer showed possible conflicts with MBAM and PrivateFirewall.

You can ignore the warning. It is more precautionary than anything else. In my case it also warned about MBAM. Or you can install Avira first and then the other two programs and you should not see the warning.

What exactly does this mean regarding an Optimized scan? "When the option is enabled, the processor capacity is optimally utilized during a System Scanner scan. For performance reasons, an optimized scan is only logged on standard level"

Briefly tested Avira free beta with APC. Its so good :D .

I am wondering with the inclusion of APC in Avira free what will be the difference between free and paid product in terms or protection, other than ProActive which is still not available for 64-bit systems ?

Also, development of Avira Browser Safety(ABS) seems to be very slow. Its been more than 6 months I guess and still no beta for Firefox  . Any news about when it will release ?
