I don't care for apple products myself, but my boy has one, a gen4 touch and a gen 2 nano. For the nano we use podshare, for the gen4 touch have used foobar2000, mediamonkey and a few others. However, you have to install the apple mobile device drivers or some such garbage. I hate having to bend to itunes wishes, but it seems almost inevitable.

You could install itunes to a vm if you had to. That is what I would do before installing it to my machine.

    HTH.

I hate Apple and his close source's idea, so I have not ipod products and I have not tryed but this 2 software can help you, and they are portable too if i'm not wrong
http://www.getsharepod.com/download/ this is the best, guide\help is in the main page
http://www.floola.com/home/ that is multiplatform but don't support all ipod and it doesn't support nano6 (and naono 7 i think)

Of course I don't know if sharepod work in the last nano ipad you have to search on google more info

Usually all of the programs that control an iPod require iTunes be installed due to drivers. MediaMonkey does and its one of the more popular ones out there.

I too loathe iTunes. With an absolute passion. IMO, it's worse than many viruses!

Anyway, recently I wanted something iPod like that didn't need anything special to use and ended up with a 16 GB Sony mp3 player. Works well just dragging and dropping folders into it like any other flash drive. Sounds good and works great!

I'm grateful some companies still understand not everyone drinks the Apple (or even Windows Media Player) Kool-Aid...

I was using sharepod for awhile, but at some point it screwed up the ipod's database such that I couldn't access many songs from the ipod. I switched to CopyTransManager and it has worked flawlessly.

That sucks, but having Itunes installed but not needing to use it would not be too bad. Most drives have lots of room on them so unless your PC is rather old this should not be a big roadblock.

    ITunes Plugin Info
    http://www.mediamonkey.com/wiki/index.php/ITunes_Plugin_Info

I hope this helps, hopefully a full workaround will be available from MM at some point.

This may or may not be helpful - its been awhile but I remember I had to unlock my Ipods in order to be able to use MM instead of Itunes, it is my understanding that unlocking the Ipod allows it to be used as a regular external drive. I would imagine that this would apply to the latest versions too.

No matter what you do to avoid iTunes, eventually you have to use it at the end.

I know nothing about apple products as i refuse to use them :p but recently an utter computer noob was given a used ipod and i was asked to show him how to use it and setup music on it.

Immediately hit a search engine and not long after had a few songs put on the ipod using the previously mentioned CopyTrans Manager - http://www.copytrans.net/copytransmanager.php

Worked like a charm and Itunes was not needed ;)

Thats funny, I just checked the linked to page and it says its free and that it does not require any installation (it can run from a jump drive). It sure sounds as if its exactly what you are looking for. Where did you see that its a for pay product? Other programs on offer by the publisher cost (between $19 and $39), but not this one.

I refer you to my post at https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showpost.php?p=2160902&postcount=13 but as I said you would have to try this since I have no idea if it will work with the Nano 7

However, the CopyTrans Manager - http://www.copytrans.net/copytransmanager.php sounds ideal for you, and contrary to your post above it is free and needs no driver installation.

Are you not seeing some of the posts?
