If you don't mind, I'd suggest you open an account at http://ubuntuforums.org/

Then, if you know that you'll have a couple of hours free at a stretch, you could post in "Absolute Beginners" giving as much detail as possible.

People will advise you mostly after asking for further details. I'm pretty confident you'll get help to your satisfaction over there.

    Hi mack_guy,

Hadn't realised you replied and thanks. Already solved sound :) and learnt my tvcard is not supported :'( Still to do webcam, thanks for cheese info.

Optimus - I'm going to try bumblebee when I'm on leave next week. As it may be hard work, could break my installation and so I need time available. EDIT: Darn it!! Couldn't wait and I broke Linux lol

As for Windows, it won't actually complete the scan which is why it keeps trying every time. My fault probably as I didn't defrag first. But I did image the partition first and create a rescue/repair disk too. So I wasn't too lazy. Incidentally, just noticed with sudo lshw that my linux partition also dirty lol

@ Noob. Hurry back to Ubuntu forums already. You have a couple of replies. I want to see what happens with the boot info script and see your problem resolved. It'll help me learn too.

I just installed Ubuntu and am in the process of 'switching'. If you have a privacy/security concern consider what I did:

I installed Win 7 on the first partition I created with gparted. I then installed Ubuntu using the 'Alternate Install' distro, to the rest of the space. This allowed me to install the OS onto an encrypted LVM. I installed the /boot partition to an SD card. I then TrueCrypted the Windows install using FDE. If I want Ubuntu, I install the SD card and boot from that using the BIOS. If I want Windows, I just let it do it's thing and boot from the MBR, which has the TC boot loader. The Windows OS is basically the decoy OS. If you absolutely didn't care about the Windows OS, you could fore-go TC and Win 7 would just boot on startup. May help in those 'can you turn your computer on' situations that are becoming more common these days.

encryption only helps till system boots after booting i wont help anylonger also if somehow your system breaks you can easly mount partitions without .......with encryption you can also mount but with encryption key only

but somehow if there is problem with encryption .....etc and unable to get to hardisk then you all data gone inside which can be easy copy by running live cd....etc at least you can save a lot which is not possible in encryption mode.

so if you want to go for encryption which i dont use or most of us dont recomend please keep and eye on backing up your data on some external drive ......etc

as far secuity all you need is gui for ufw (uncomplicated firewall) which Gufw

apparmor for paranoid mode its more than enough.

To each their own, but I would never use a mobile computer without full disk encryption these days. The computer should never be on unless you"re in front of it, and there are many times it can be stolen when it is in the powered down state. Backups...of course! :D

I strongly recommend reading this article. It out lines all of the fundamentals of the Command line. Even if you only glance over the begging it will definitely help.

I also recommend trying Linux Mint or PClinuxOS as both have a more "windows" feel to them and may be easier to get used to using.

Why not use a live USB stick until you are comfortable enough with linux? Or a VM?

If this is with reference to noob's problem, I'm not sure trying another distro will help.

Mint's installation process is based on Ubuntu's Ubiquity, IIRC.

The question of getting used to the distro is secondary. Right now, successful installation is the problem.

Don't give up dude. Give it one more try.

If it's any consolation, it will install much cleaner with a fresh install of Windows first. The Windows file system will not be fragmented on different locations on the hard disk for example.

If you wanted, I could walk you through step-by-step the full installation process.

Just consider the previous attempt as part of a learning curve. It is a positive. You have already gained knowledge from the first installation attempt. So it was a good thing in the bigger picture. And now you can build further on your skills.

Anyhow, the offer stands. Step-by-step is available.

Have you reformatted and re-installed Windows 7 though? Do you have more than one physical hard drive?

I have to go now. Need to hand in 3,000 word essay to college in about 8 hours and haven't started it yet!! Got to focus...

I'll be back after and will try to help if you want. (no guarantees it'll work though). If you could image/backup your Windows and defrag too (in case fresh install left files in weird places) in the meantime pls

better make 2 partitions before installing windows and ubuntu install windows 1st them ubuntu

also yes ubuntu rewrite mbr and its needed as window bootloader cannot reconize ubuntu so easy way is install grub to boot windows and ubuntu

you cannot have both i mean windows bootloader mbr and grub in your mbr have to choose one

second way is if you dont want to mess with windows mbr then install ubuntu grub in its own partition and with the help of 3rd party tool give path create a boot

    or use wubi

    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide

also remember when you need to install windows you have to formate ubuntu 1st if its on same drive

3rd if you want to use ubuntu for fun just as hobbiest then better install it on external drive if your laptop/desktop support boot from usb you can still run full OS from it without problem.

    also great stuff to read

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2

if you specify what type of install you want and what are your partition type ..............etc

No sorry. What I meant was instead of Ubuntu. I learned on Mint after switching from ubuntu and found it more comfortable at first so I though I would mention it.

Mint seems to have a more "windows-esk" feel to it. I actually almost forgot I was using linux for a while, but now I am using Arch linux.

    also some ubuntu basic commands

    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=273736

you can also try ubuntu LTS if this one is buggy on your system

LTS are old but they made for stability

also like to add in LTS you dont have gnome 3 or unity but old gnome 2 also its supported till 2013 so not a bad deal to start and learn about it.

many of us still use LTS including me as our main distro on laptop :thumb:

And we'll all try our best not to drift off topic this time so it stays focused on support! Last time, it was like taking a train that was stopping at various locations for sightseeing tours on the way to our main destination. For example:

pic.jpg Just joking Mack_Guy :D We're all as bad as each other lol :-*
