I think yours was a very good post. I'll start by saying I am not privileged to any inside information on Immunet. I have previously stated most of what I just posted via email to Al or others at Immunet and in posts at their forums. They haven't corrected me yet! :D

I think you made a very good point regarding comment regarding files being flagged by a user or the Immunet community and I was probably way off base in that part of my post. The cloud and the community would benefit from a) suspicious files that are submitted by users for analysis or b) suspicious files that the software identifies and uploads for analysis.

Tantamount to ‘stealing’ the intellectual property? If it is just positive hits for malware, I don't think that would apply. Don't most of the majors analyse the new definitions released by the competition on a regular basis?

I think only the pro has bitdefender parts, and the pro probably can stand alone, but I am not sure it has been tested.

The Pro / Paid version has the extra engine, plus local definitions so it should be used as a standalone.

Yes, they have 64-bit and 32-bit versions.

I do not doubt that some vendors have malware sharing agreements established with other vendors, but the question is: does Immunet have such agreements in place? And, if so, with which vendors?

Think about the issue this way. Let’s consider two users: User A is running Immunet Protect as well as Norton Internet Security (NIS), and User B is only running Immunet Protect. If NIS (but not Immunet Protect) detects “Spyware.007Spy” for User A and then Immunet Protect “copies” that protection for use by everyone else in their own network, then Immunet and User B are in effect both benefiting from the work of Symantec without paying a license fee (assuming that Immunet and Symantec have no malware sharing agreement). Am I misunderstanding something? This procedure seems unscrupulous to me.

A bit too late, but I did my own virus detection test on IMP 2.0 Plus and my numbers are as follows (please note that 11 scans were done on malware sample):

    Different malware files tested: 75694

    Failure to quarantine malware: 6193

    Total malware remaining after: 14676

Detection and removal rate is: ~81%

In some previous tests I have seen detection rate of up to: 88%

Please note that these files were not active in the system. Instead they were collected from infected computers and scanning host was a clean computer.

me thinks the toolbar may go bye-bye and a nice little gift for Wilders members may arise.

If this is true, this would place immunet with the top av apps, right?

    ASK Toolbar

    All,

Now that our release is out, we've had a moment to sit back and reflect on the feedback we've gotten from our community. Some of the feedback we received was clear that our implementation of a build with the ASK toolbar gave some people a degree of discomfort.

As a result we've released a new build - Version 2.0.11.4. This new build fixes some outstanding UI issues and completely removes the ASK toolbar. In the next couple of weeks we'll discuss this issue with our Community to review our next steps.

    Best,
    al

Congrats on the new release. Your officially better than Avast Free, Avira Free, and others that include ads and toolbars to fund themselves according to this groups logic.

Good questions. Let me preface my answers with, we do not pull detections from other vendors. We had decided during our beta that we would try to watch what 3 other vendors were detecting (we support something like 20) so we did not step on their detections. The code was cumbersome and never made it out of beta.

Now to your other questions earlier the in thread, you wonder if you can game a community models like ours. The short answer is, yes. You can game any system malware vendors use, it can be appending bytes to a header to avoid detection of the PE file or gaming a social communities to amp up reputation or vote down blacklists etc. Our model can be attacked the same was spammers game ant-spam companies. We built with this in mind. All approaches to stopping malware get gamed and this will always be the case.

Of course we trade malware with other respectable parties, with pretty much every vendor there is in fact. This is true of all vendors. It's one of the good things about this industry, people often put the general users in front of competition and share samples, thankfully there is more than enough to go around.

Very good move indeed. :thumb: :thumb:

Instead of Ask toolbar, a little ad for the pro version in the free version is acceptable, again IMO only.

I disagree, if it helps create revenue, keep it!

Just change the installation, unticking standard installation is NOT the norm.

Just add another option underneath that clearly says 'install ask toolbar' so people can untick it clearly if they wish to.

So I was just checking this out at their website and it appears that it would not be compatible with Avast 5 free nor while browsing with Firefox, is this correct? Thank You!

I've tried avast 5 and IMP 2.0 free together on my gf's laptop. Haven't seen a conflict yet. Things have been running smooth so far.

Thankfully, I was hoping this would be the answer. :)

I am curious to learn more. How does Immunet Protect seek to guard against a mischievous set of users in the community who work to make a good application look like malware, or to make a malware threat look like a trustworthy tool?

I expected this to be true. Since “every vendor” does so in the same manner as Immunet, then this aspect of Immunet Protect is not a unique point of differentiation.

Thus, the original question (post #194) remains: “In what ways is Immunet Protect different from (better than) its competition? Has Immunet Protect advanced the science of malware detection in theory or in practice? If so, how?”

    Thank you.

Should I add IP to my Avast and Sandboxie exclusion lists?
