Some years ago I used to use a startup manger and when I reinstalled my os couldn't find it and let it go. Lately I've been thinking of getting a new software for this task since my latest notebook absolutely has too much startup crap. Sure you can use msconfig and look through other system areas to track down and disable/test anything but software is for adding convinience.

    1. absolute startup interesting has a db of 4000 programs and gives recommendations as to whether you need a program at startup or if it can be up to you, etc etc. amongst other features

    it does cost though. http://www.absolutestartup.com/features.html

Some others I'll just copy and pate key features of

    2. Chameleon Startup Manager allows you to specify various tasks to be run (15 types - switch off the computer, start a program, stop Winamp, etc.), launch conditions for them (11 types - if Windows is idle, after a software is started, etc.) and on what days and how many times to run them.

    *********FREE ONES***********

    3. Autoruns
These programs include ones in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. You can configure Autoruns to show other locations, including Explorer shell extensions, toolbars, browser helper objects, Winlogon notifications, auto-start services, and much more. Autoruns goes way beyond the MSConfig utility bundled with Windows Me and XP.

    4. System explorer
Detailed informations about Tasks, Processes, Modules, Startups, IE Addons, Uninstallers, Windows, Services, Drivers, Connections and Opened Files.
Easy check of suspicious files via VirusTotal or Jotti service.
Easy search details about file/process via online databases.
Security Extension for automatic check of processes, modules and selected files.

    5. Startup Manager
    GNU
Make programs start on logon (add items)
    Rename existing items
    Delete existing items
    Disable existing items
    Enable existing items
Create a batch file with programs that start in a certain order
Startup folders (all users and current user)
    Registry sections
All the run and services sections (all and current user)
Computer sections: winlogon (userinit and shell) and BHO (browser helper objects)
    Win.ini sections (load and run)

Me, I think I'll be going with either #3 or #4 leaning more towards #4 and if unsatified with the lookup feature I'll use #3.

oh and here are some websites to manually check files

    CastleCops - CLSID BHOList ToolbarList
    Process Library
    SysInfo Startup Applications List
    Windows Startup Online Repository
    RunScanner Process List
    TaskList

Any insightful comments or recommendations appreciated.

I just use the one built into ccleaner. It's basic, but does all I want.

Call me old fashion but I go directly to the program in question and disable it there. Same with checking for whether or not it auto-updates. Like I said, just call me old fashion. :p

    Ok, you're old fashioned! :D

Seriously, some programs can't or won't allow themselves to be disabled. I have just found that a good startup manager makes life a bit easier...

    I asked for it. :D

True, some do not give you the option. I know at least one type of printer that has a process or two that must run at start-up or they will not print. I no longer buy them.

If my method fails then I fall back on Google to identify processes and MS config to disable them. Being a bit annal I then go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\] and remove the items I have disabled. For example, my MS config has only 6 entries, all of which are enabled.

I use it because it is simple but better is that to create a new startup item, all you need is the process running. You don't even have to browse for a new item.

Sully: Thank you; I have StartupMonitor & I'm happy!

Mistycat: Thank you for your link !!!

PS. To SUSPEND the process rather than kill it .
The process appears to be running, but it cannot do anything.

    Look to DTaskManager possibilities !:argh:

    Cool !

    Bonjour PROROOTECT,

no, unfortunately for DIMIO, it's not from her/him! By the way, yes there is a free version (with only some particular features turned off). See their versions comparaison table.
