Correct. Only version 7.5 supports Windows 98. After August 2008, no more support will be made for Windows 98. I guess version 7.5 will stop updating?

    @ccsito
That's right, 7.5 will be phased out and no more updates.

Generally v7.5 uninstalls very cleanly - never had any problems myself.
Now v8 is a different matter - or so it seems from all the reports.

Do you need to uninstall 7.5 first before you install 8.0?

I am sort of confused by the last question. Since version 8.0 is not compatible with Windows 98, why would you uninstall version 7.5 and then attempt to install a version that would not be accepted on the PC? o_O

I wouldn't recommend this, but it can be installed on 98 SE with a forced install. Protection for 98 SE is mere conjecture!

A Win 98 machine should not be connected to the internet. Its use, if any, should be limited to running legacy software that will not run on newer versions of windows. Win 98 has numerous unpatched vulnerabilities and is not safe to use in the present environment. If that is all you have got, get something else.

You should tell that to all Win98 users. Get something else? Do you mean an Apple PC?

Thanks for the clarification. I presumed that you had another computer with another OS system, but wasn't sure.

For 9x/ME PCs, BitDefender 10 Free affords very good on access and email scanning for much more than can ever attack a 9x/ME PC. Some feel as though 9x/ME PCs are a danger to the internet, which has been said also by many of Microsoft! But BD 10 Free with a few antispyware apps shall allow a 9x/M to access safely the WWW without spreading the 9x/ME fear.

I think the following statement from a few posts ago is a little over the top:
I have many clients who still run Win98 and have no problems using the Internet - it's just a question of appropriate protection. And in several areas a Win98 system is less vulnerable because it doesn't run the NT processes targeted by those W32 nasties such as the Sasser Worm.

Bearing in mind that it now appears AVG v7.5 will be supported on Win98 until December I would still suggest the following setup:
A firewalled router, AVG v7.5, Spybot and SpywareBlaster with full immunisation and Hosts file installed - which seems to keep my clients safe on Win98. Some might like to add ZoneAlarm firewall as well - but I think it is overkill for most systems.

The AVG Free Support Forum is the main source of info but many people all over the web have joined the debate due to the conflicting dates given by different elements within AVG Technologies. The following is a selection of links to various sources.

http://freeforum.avg.com/read.php?1,123812 - Primary source AVG Free Forum

    http://www.grisoft.com/ww.faq.num-1350#faq_1350 - AVG Website FAQ

http://grandstreamdreams.blogspot.com/2008/06/grisoftplease-stop-madness.html - Interesting summary of AVG problems

SuperAntiSpyware has good reports - although I have only used it as a backup scanner.

I have a Windows 98 SE laptop that still connects to the internet it use's Firefox 3 and sits safely behind my Network. 90% of all virus made today are coded to mess with the NT kernel. and the system32 folder. windows 98 still use's good old system folder lol. honestly the hackers nowadays are not looking to take over your old windows 98 computer. they want XP or vista. 98 may have vunrablitys but there not really exploited anymore. good AV and a good firewall and you will be fine along with a good browser.

Why the heck would someone be running Win98?

Don't you think it's time to upgrade?

There's no antispyware or antivirus that'd allow W98/ME users to browse web safely. They don't patch obvious and unfixed bugs in Windows components... and they are not designed to catch exploiting security bugs and flaws in those. Ditch this operating system, if you don't have money to spend on HW and Windows upgrade, then install Linux on those boxes.

...And since this poster does I would recommend he follow diver's advice.

Also I did just what JRViejo suggested with a ME OS added more ram got a purchased boxed cd of XP Home. Used it for years. That PC while slow is still in service with a relative who can not afford to buy. It is slow but so are they ;).

I believe one day it will be returned to me at which time I will be following diver's advice. Disconnected from the internet but fully functional in all other aspects for which the internet is not needed. Nothing wrong with that at all. :) :thumb: Why not keep a goodie but oldie in service. :D

I'm just a 9x/ME fan. Rising AV supports 9x/ME, as well as Twister AV. A well-plugged 9x/ME system is very safe, and it does take a great deal of "plugging." But it is fun to install 200x, XP and Vista.
