Hi greenhorn.

SafeSpace only virtualizes certain areas of the file system, namely those areas which contain system, application files or trash data. These are the areas where changes are purged.

All other areas are treated as Private. What does this mean? Well, it means that any existing files in there are inaccessible to applications in SafeSpace. And any new files created are tagged so they can and will only be opened in SafeSpace again.

What does this really mean? It means that when you download something, you can download it to your REAL folder, and you can keep it there permanently in amongst your other files, without having to worry about what lurks inside it. There is no manual steps involved for putting certain files in a certain folder for them to persist. There is no danger about trust because they are protected and clearly visible as such by the red border around them.

There is no obvious way to move files out of the sandbox. And because of how SafeSpace works, there is no need to.

It allows me to use my computer for everything I want to do and protects it from anything on the web side. Returnil will wipe away your regular stuff if you do not exclude it.

Both work well, I just prefer to have the internet side of things virtualized. i

 

the reality is, it is really all you need and its free. Shhh.

I really don't see anything new or exciting rising on the security horizon for XP for quite awhile, simply improvements to already decent programs that have solidly put a Lock & Chain squarely down on potential threats/risks.

They certainly have torn open the fence when it comes to meeting the challenges we used to have to dodge around with just an AV or AS.

 

I finally installed faronics AE after reading everything I could about it. I actually think AE, along with DeepFreeze or fdisr is all a person needs to be absolutely safe. If it can't run it can't hurt you and AE will stop just about everything out there today. I'm not giving up Sandboxie though, as that extra line of defense.

As a side note (off topic), I'm really PO'd today. The wife and I are getting laptops, both with XP. Every one of the dirtbag outfits we've contacted - who will sell a computer with XP - charges about $100 MORE to have XP on board. Some don't offer the option at all. I wonder if this isn't saying that an awful lot of people are demanding XP and the companies are noticing and jacking the prices of XP computers/laptops?

Many Laptop manufacturers will offer an xp "downgrade" if you request direct... Usually for free (with a special SKU #) however, If you ask for a small local computer dealer, if it's a unit that he has in stock, or if the Wholesalers put the squeeze on him and play the MS Symphony back to him, he will have to remove vista himself, and install a OEM version of XP on it which costs him somewhere around $100.00 for the Home edition... (He probably will also have to do the work for Free which would explain why some wont do it at all).

The issue is between Microsoft and the laptop manufacturers... They are forcing many to install Vista, and a slew of "Microsoft Trial ware" to go with it. They are working extra hard to make all small white box OEM dealers like me do it as well ... I know in my last event where MS met with our local OEM dealers via the AMD Show we where practically brainwashed to install all their Trial ware together with Vista (We almost Booed them out of the room over it, you could really feel the tension in the room). So I know there is a lot of resistance against it, but most wont be able to hold against the push for long...

I can tell you that within the consultant community, many still wont sell Vista. I still push XP on most new computer I build unless they practically force me to sell them Vista, and I can assure you I'm not the only one! And I certainly will never Pre install any Microsoft Trial Ware on anything I build!

If consumers want it they can always download them from the MS sites...

Maybe its my set up but applications either browsers or email progs took an eternity to load and at the moment I have uninstalled it,something was very wrong.

Well, in reality if it wasnt for a good suite, the one product that would cover all would be SafeSpace. I love it but I have heard it either works great or is a pain in the ass for users. Glad my ass in paining.

 

My kind of set up, i like it.

I couldn't resist the passion to pass along a complimentary remark after seeing FileChangeAlarm in that list. I bet there are very few who would even bother with it since it's from the Windows98 days and long abandoned, but personally i like to know what my system is doing in the folders and like being alerted to whatever can be logged and reviewed. But then Kerio is been long left behind but i still get excellent results with it too, plus it's light as a feather.

You might say i constantly starve for more data/facts, so the more info an app offers, the more filled i am.

 

Can I ask in what specific way are you guys are using sandboxie and defensewall together?
