It's not totaly unussual, I remember back when I started using V2.7 there was a day I got 7 or 8 updates :O

:P never said it was right :P I use interactive so I wasn't sure but I thought I saw it posted somewhere that that was how you did it.
I'm pretty sure you just need to add a rule for it while in interactive and then it will use the rule in automatic as well.

As far as I understand it depends on the file type. Execution is for files such as exe and msi where as open would be zip, rar and doc.
have you enabled the programs in the firewall rules and set them to allow?
chances are it was there before ESS was. if you're concerned about it seeing things in zip files:
