Going from dynamic to basic can be a real PITA, because you may have to format the drive.
Is your E: drive an internal or external???
I assume your bootable CD is made on a regular CD-RW?
Is the CD-ROM drive on the computer you're trying to recover supports DVD ROM?

I have their USB 2/IEEE 1394 500 GB and it's very good.
The SATA one should be even faster.
I find that creating the bootable media directly from the management console is much quicker and easier.
Give that a shot.
