I solved the problems with installing wicd, i've dropped NetworkManager from this machine, i couldn't...
From the release-notes.
What i gather from the release-notes from 9.04RC there is still discussion about the ext4 filesystem and ext3 is still the default....
I've installed 8.10 in a virtual machine just to test wicd.

Doesn't it keep the changes you've made for the duration of the livecd session stored in ram?
I have exectly that setup as discribed in the solution, but i've tried it by manually editing the config files aswell, that worked also....
I found this one on the ubuntu forums, it did the trick for me;
1) sudo update-rc.d -f NetworkManager remove (remove NetworkManager links)...

I've tried the live-cd, had the same trouble as with 8.10, no wired connection.
Apparently this is a bug in NetworkManager....
I have the same problem with the "telnet" service, but i know it's off, so it's no big deal.
Maybe MBSA 2.1 from MS can do this ?
I use it on a XPpro guest in VMware Server...

Maybe the reason is that you're using a beta, FF3 isn't ready yet.

I use Clonezilla, it's free and reliable, for imaging different drives and partitions.
On top of that i backup all data to an external drive....
You could download a iso-image from a distro and and burn it to a cd, this will give an indication of how it will behave on your laptop.
The RC from Gutsy is out, it's not the final release but you could try it out, if you make an image of your current install,no harm can be done....
It is easy to make a mistake with these commands, so copy/paste is a neat trick to avoid trouble. ;)
