Hi, folks: I have a lifetime license for AVG AS, and now have CBOC as a freeware. Both run realtime. ATM, I have only CBOC on duty . What is your opinion regarding to these two's assignments? Keep both or select one only ? Tough choice. Help.

I have BOClean realtime and AVG AS on demand which has been working well for me. I had Ewido, now AVG AS real time for a year but decided it was not really needed.Of course now I also have A Squared realtime(4 month trial) but all is working very well and quite smooth.
But if you have a lifetime lic for AVG AS,I would say run them both in realtime for the added protection as long as they do not conflic or take up to much memory/cpu for you.

if you can spare the resources (and/or want the extra protection) then run both realtime; otherwise have BOClean realtime and use AVG AS as ondemand.

I'm not sure when BOClean's realtime protection comes into play; I get the impression that it is scanning memory realtime looking to see what's running. AVG-AS's Guard isn't quite like that, it will only scan executable files when you attempt to open them - but at that time it scans them twice, once before the file runs and once as it unloads into memory.

If BOClean only scans things in memory while AVG-AS scans before the file even starts to run then in theory AVG-AS should be picking things up before they ever get started while BOClean does not. I would need clarification of this point, but if that is correct I would prefer to run AVG-AS realtime rather than BOClean.

Hi, folks: By looking at CBOC's configuration option, it does carry out startup scan and monitor system continuously. I would assume they are performed in memory only (?), are these adequate ?

Do I gather that you guys presently it's more important (on average) to have a real time anti-trojan (a squared, boclean) than real time anti-spwyware (super, avg)? Thanks.

Well BOClean doesnt have a full ondemand scanner as other anti-malware products. You just run it realtime.

Most spyware is dropped from trojans (apart from the stuff that you accidently install while attempting to install something else) so given the choice I would rather have the Anti-Trojan running realtime in lieu of an AS product. I'm counting AVG-AS as being an AT rather than an AS scanner on the basis of what its Guard actually does.

If you can stop the spyware laden trojan from running on your system then you are not going to get the malware activity occuring that the typical AS is looking for. Obviously this is more desirable.

That is correct IME with the two, personally if lets say BOClean and ewido actually detected the same amount of malware then ewido would be the best choice without a shadow of a doubt, it is simply better at stopping and just as important removing what it finds before it is rooted in the system.

    But I can't say that.
My experience in submissions of "new" malware to Virus Total says just the opposite.
BOClean typically sees it as just another variant.

Which means it's your opinion based of "testing" with VirusTotal.....i've had plenty of malware sail right past BOClean without a pip.........both proves nothing about how good/bad it is. :)

It was not my point at all, the point was that BOClean is not particularly good in the removal of what it detects, in fact it's decidedly bad IME compared to others.

I have used BOClean since i bought it in 2001-2 until a year ago or thereabouts and nobody will see me rant about that, i got more than i payed for in terms service etc, but i hope the Comodo acquisition of BOClean will mean it will get it's long needed extreme makeover. :)

    Hi Don,

What do you do on the net, that so much malware can sail right past your defenses?

I've uninstalled Comodo Boclean, as I could 'terminate' it using just task manager. I thought about re-installing TrojanHunter, which has termination protection, but have not. I also have AVG/AS which I use as an on-demand scanner. It seems that AT's nowadays, are not as relevant, as yesterday.

Some of the best/nicest people to deal with, regarding killing malware before it has a chance to install is 'LinkScanner'. I used this for quite awhile. With LinkScanner, running 'point' (marching in front of other soliders) LinkScannersoldiers never found anything to block. LinkScanner to CD & deleted from HD.

One of the most overlooked areas/reason for Trojans not being installed is avoidance/passive defense. Host's file, Spywareblaster, IE-Spyad etc. This type defense is enven ahead of 'point guard' LinkScanner, thus helping keep Link's blocked threats at 0.

I guess IMHO relevancy of AT's, has been diminished, with the improvement of AV's, AS's, HiPs, so as to make AT's resource useage not meaningful.

    Take Care
    Rico
