Honest opinions for NIS 2007 and Norton 360

Many people have always had bad things to say about norton... but they really seem to be producing some good products now...

I want some honest feedback from users (not abusers) and knowledgable users on the above two products... in the following areas:-

speed
detection
cleaning
firewall effectiveness
useability for advanced and novice users
range of functions etc...

norton IS 2007 is a great product, almost perfect

i would personally stay away from 360, its not as good as the suite - my opinion

fully reccommend 'norton internet security 2007'

edit: according to tests, norton 2007 offers great detection, lowest of false positives and similar system performance to kaspersky

 

It has performed well in the on demand test in AV-comparatives. It is one of the few AVs that has consistently scored 100% in catching polymorphic viruses.

I recently had difficulty installing both the integrated product (with firewall) and stand alone AV. The installer requires system processes running that I usually don't run. It also seems to add a lot of processes to the system.

I recognize that it is an excellent AV but it is too bloated for me.

 

I run Nav 2007 stand alone and like it a lot. I have tried most of the others but liked Nav 2007 the best.

The 360 'bashing' is a bit odd... When people believe PC Mag on IS2007 they must look at this one too:

360 Gets an evenly good report there. I like both packages a lot. I had 360, now I try out IS2007. Both great in what they do!

 

i don't think there's any problem in believing in reviews by pcmag and when i say norton is the best suite...its entirely based upon my personal experience with it.

yes there was a review of zonealarm-6 which i think was not upto the mark.But generally their reviews are reliable...

Just a few more observations to add. At that time I thought antispam was included but it wasn't. It is available as a free add-on pack which also comes with parental controls and ad blocking.

I have my account set up as a Standard User. One day I was in my Admin account and I noticed a firewall pop-up stating that it had blocked an intrusion attempt. I have never seen this in my standard account as the only way I know about such attempts is checking the firewall's log.

Other than that NIS has been working fine (and quiet-the way I like it). I had only one trojan that was blocked from a website so I don't have any experience with removal just yet.

 

I've used NIS for the past 5 years. This is by far the best version of them all. BY FAR.

Also just bear in mind that if you get NIS 2007 or 2006 you are entitled to the new versions as long as your subscription is valid (typically for a year). I am running KAV and KIS on two other machines at home. Both really slow down my web browsing unless you disable Web Antivirus. KIS's anti-phishing realy sucks compared to NIS and its anti-spam should not have shipped. The amount of FPs in KIS's antispam is unacceptable.

 

I have used the trial version of NIS 2007 and to be honest it's one of Symantec's best overall suite in years and its quite light on resources and isn't that much a bloatware as it once was and its detection rates are also very good.Overall NIS 2007 in my opinion is a suite worth buying

 

seems like im gonna have to take back the mcaffee 2007 version is better than the 2006 version since the 2006 version uses 13 processes which is alot and then the new version uses 22! OMG.
i cant try norton 2007 since my test pc runs windows 2000 pro and i think norton 2007 only works on xp upwards correct me if im wrong.
if my test pc ran xp i would be happy to see what all the fuss is about.
im no longer gonna rant about norton being rubbish since they seem to have improved in the resource departments. and they also seem to remove more cleanly. i wont comment any further since i havent tryed it

about kis6.0 antispam,
its a very decent antispam.
i used to complain about all my emails being labeled spam untill i used the training wizard. now its labels my emails right.

Too bad, I wish you could at least try it out for yourself.

I haven't used NIS2007 or Norton 360 but I did use NAV2007. I had two problems and I think they are relevent here also. First problem is the process ccsvchst.exe doesn't terminate sometimes while shutting down the computer. Second problem is the liveupdate module sometimes doesn't update the program and manual update becomes necessary.

The version that I used is 14.2.0.29 which is the latest build. So any of you guys who used NIS2007 or Norton 360 have you noticed similar problems?

I haven't experienced that problem, AMRX. My version of NIS is 10.2.0.30.

 

my comp takes a longer time,than usual, to shut-down after i have started using nis-07.........maybe it has something to do with point...AMRX has raised about "ccsvchst.exe"

 

According to symantec, if we keep the box checked for scan boot disc while shutting down, such problems may arise. AFAIK no one uses floppy discs now nor anyone sets the first boot device as anything other than the hard drive. So we can very well disable it. But I experienced the problem sporadically even after that.

More to it, i saw ccapp.exe forcibly shut down by XP while shutting down. Symantec also tells to set AutoEndTasks as 1 in the following registry key. Obviously these are all band-aid solutions.

I used the latest not yet released 10.3 version of NIS. I must admit it looks good and works great.

 

Do you know when it will be officially released?

I have used most all the AVs and suites, and keep coming back to NIS 2007. Might not have detection as good as Avira and KIS, but I'm having issues with the firewall in the Avira Suite and I still get slow browsing with KIS. I don't trust McAfee's detection anymore, even if it's free with my Comcast. NIS 2007 works well for me, and with my layered protection, I feel safe.

That's not to say I won't change in the future, but this is how I feel at this point.

 

right now, it would be NIS or Eset, period. I agree totally with the reasons you stated. I put NIS back on my laptop last night, and even though it took a loooong time to finally complete the process, it was great. But I also think the Eset suite has the potential to up the ante for all of them. KIS? Gave my 3 year license away. The ball and chain didnt like my PC.

That Eset Suite is very promising. The beta doesn't like either of the wireless adapters I put on and is the only suite to give me a BSOD, but this is just the first beta.
