HPChat just told me the problem. I feel embarrassed if this is really all it is. The black cartridge is empty. That did not occur to me because it will print a test page in black and all colors perfectly and there was no indication earlier that the black ink was running low...usually the black gets less black and you know it is time to get new cartridge. I've had this printer for 8 years and never once before has it just suddenly had no ink with no warning with the black getting fainter. The tech said whether there is a warning as the ink gets low is due to your print habits and if you print a lot the black will get faint and you will know to get a new cartridge. I used to print a lot. I don't now and he said with less printing there will be no warning ...just suddenly blank pages will print.

I asked why it would print a perfect test page with dark black ink if the cartridge is empty. He said the test page is printed without the help of printer or computer drivers. When you print a page with the help of the drivers a certain amount of ink in the cartridge is required. There can be an amount less than the required amount in the cartridge and that is why the test page will print fine. I didn't know that. I guess the test page is just to see if the printer functions correctly and I thought the test page tested the communication of the printer with the computer and whether or not the drivers worked properly. My assumption was wrong. I would have thought of ink as a possibility if I had understood what the test does and doesn't do. I can't believe all these years and I didn't know this about the test page.

I'll get some ink tomorrow. I hope Walmart has this and usually is out as OfficeMax is a lot higher price.

As for an image, I have Acronis TI 8 and cannot get beyond the load screen when using the boot disk. Acronis Help just told me to install a trial of ver. 10 but I like 8 and I read how buggy 10 is...I will have to pursue that problem further but it looks like I won't need an image as this probably is just ink problem. Although if the problem is the ink cartridge that doesn't explain why Windows detected new hardware and installed a second instance of the printer right after I uninstalled the Avira rootkit detector.

Why though, I ask the gods, did the ink dry up suddenly right after the Avira update? Especially when Avira did have a print problem bug for a day on the very day the ink evidently dried up? Naturally, I would think it was Avira...not a sudden ink dry up. This is the second really dumb thing that has happened to me regarding the computer in the last few days (the Dell field tech was over yesterday to replace the floppy drive and he left the floppy in the drive and I rebooted not realizing that and called Dell because it appeared the hard drive was dead from the error message. The tech, after further trouble shooting, also thought the drive was dead and was about to send a new drive until a fellow tech suggested he ask me if there was a floppy in the drive and once I removed it the computer booted just fine) so since things come in three's what will be the third dumb thing?

Perfectly understandable conclusion for that unfortunate coincidence,
after loading a Printer Driver, it always asks to print a test page,
same when a new cartridge is installed on my HP Printers.

A Dell (first for me) hardware failure just saved my bacon. :D

Windows Restore has never worked very well and I use an ancient Roxio
(bought by Symantec now) GoBack that always worked
(provided your changes did not exceed its 7GB 'Bin' capacity).

It has a "Safe-Try" feature to 'try' software and then return to previous state if wanted.

I foolishly used it for a clean install of build 244 AntiVir.

Began a system scan and went to watch a movie, when I returned, saw a message
"...bin was full, click to return to previous state".

This proceded to 20% with "internal error, failure code: gb_genlog(175), press any key to re-boot"

Which repeated fifty times, booted to WinXP CD and had no luck with 'Recovery'
as GoBack still had complete control of C:\ drive.

Was just about to "install Windows" when CD Drive failed..
Shortly after, GoBack completed its Recovery successfully and Dell is shipping a new CDRW/DVD under a very old warranty.

I was unable to do that update for hours back on the 19th, so I downloaded the latest version from MajorGeeks. I just looked at the Reports section of AntiVir and noticed that it is full of failed attempts to update. My last update was on the 20th. I tried to update just now and it still failed on all servers.

I am incredibly pleased with AntiVir, as far as the program is concerned. But these server problems are really getting to be a problem for me.

    Re: Antivir Update Slow

There are a number of recent posts here which confirm that many, if not most users are experiencing the same problem.

I haven’t noticed too much difference although it probably is a bit slower.
For reasons I won’t go in to here, I’ve undertaken the major update a number of times.
The Update normally ‘times out’ two or three times before commencing.
The download then progresses rather slowly which I think is pretty much the norm for Avira.

The Paid version may well be quicker.

I find it tends to be much better in the morning than in the evening [GMT].
No offence intended but I suspect it gets busy once our American friends are active.

Not sure if we are talking here about definitions updates, there are several update threads about this issue.

    Regarding definitions:
I noticed that the service sched.exe stopped all the time although it is set to automatic start.
This is a known issue at Avira and they haven't found a solution yet.

I made a new task in Task Scheduler to run preupd.exe at regular intervals.
    AntiVir is updating fine now.

Of course you can do it manually as well and run (shortcut) preupd.exe at your convenience.

    Re: Antivir Update Slow

Same here, I am on the month trial. I got my AntiVir updating, it should update more offen after I purchase my licence. Right now I have AntiVir check for a update every two hours.

I uninstalled the whole AntiVir, cleaned registry.
Downloaded AntiVir PE again, although it seems exact the same file as I had already.
Installed again and it is working now as it should be.
Sched.exe has not stopped anymore :doubt: :)
    Download speed seems normal.

I should nock wood but that causes RSI ;)

I finally got some more black ink and it was out of black ink because now when I hold the power button in and press the resume button four times and release power button, it prints a report in black ink along with the black and 3 colors grids. It was not printing anything except the color grids before.

But that didn't fix the problem. UGH. I think the Avira rootkit scanner driver really messed up something. I still can't print ANYTHING except the test page. Plus, Belarc Advisor says that I still have Avira free version installed (I uninstalled it several weeks ago when I got the offer here of the premium version trial) and says it is running and updated! It gets its information from Windows Security Center (which I keep disabled) so Security Center evidently still detects Avira free (doesn't detect the Premium version at all evidently) and thinks it is running and updated. I don't know if the Security Center is just confused or what. The registry cleaner I use didn't find any Avira stuff but it is not an aggressive cleaner. I recall once before having to clear the Security Center but can't remember what I did.

Aside from my printer problem, I wish Avira would fix that Belarc Advisor problem. Advisor says I have 50 INSTANCES of Avira free edtion installed on my computer! Avira just laughs when you ask them to fix it. There are some things about Avira that make it look so stupid and the forum stupid and that is it for support. Even if I use Avira again after I somehow get the printer working, I won't buy it when the trial is up because of no email support. I'm ok with only forum support for the free version but not the paid one... especially since the forum is not that good and support is available ONLY during GERMAN BUSINESS HOURS Monday through Friday.

Thank you. I've done that before. It doesn't fix it. That is a bandaid and the problem starts immediately again. Belarc Advisor support says that Avira has to fix it. That registry fix is scary too.. the first time I had no problems...the second time I swore I wouldn't risk doing that again. I've read where using that fix caused at least one person to have to reformat. Plus, it doesn't fix it for some people. It didn't fix it for me except the first time.
