Afaic, UD does its (online) defragging very well indeed and offers very useful options. However, there are 2 areas that definitely need improvement:
    • UDs offline (boot-time) defragging is weak (I base this on subsequent offline defrags with DK) with no reporting of its offline analysis/defrag.
    • Disktrix support is terribly slow in responding to user problems and questions!

Raxco's support is very good in my experience. Not to mention PD is working well on my computer.:D

Since I have uninstalled Ultimatedefrag (post hoc ergo propter hoc ?), I got these two messages when I start windows :
OODBS program not found - skipping autocheck
UDBDef program not found - skipping autocheck

    Any ideas ? Thanks.

Anyone know how this is done? I can't find it in the options menu.

    Many thanks,

When you start the program, it will check if that is enabled or not. If is enabled, prompt if you want to let it enabled or disabled...

So....I have to reinstall to find out if I enabled or disabled it? Is there another way to determine how this is set other than a reinstall?

    Many thanks,

    Silver

Is not when you install it, but when you run it... ;)

You can see the Help file, in PDF, to see more info about about check if that features are enabled or not on your system...

Thanks, I misread your earler post. I substituted "install" for "start". I have studied the PDF and I still don't get it.

I have respect layout.ini checked. However, I can't find anything in the PDF that shows how to stop Windows from redoing the layout every 3 days.

I think it has something to do with "Complete High Performance then Stop"?

Can you shed any light on this?

    Thanks,

    Silver

You can disable that feature by installing TweakUI powertoy, going to the General section, and unchecking "Optimise hard disk when idle".

I found this in the FAQ at DiskTrix:

"Even though I respect Layout.ini - several days later, some of these files have moved to more inner tracks of the drive.

This is Windows Boot Optimize function doing its thing every 3 days. It attempts to optimize the boot files. With UltimateDefrag's respect layout.ini it is not necessary for Windows to run its boot optimize function since it is a less optimized state than UltimateDefrag creates. The layout that UltimateDefrag creates is actually the most optimized state, sequence and position that your boot files could be in.

To prevent Windows from running the BootOptimize function, you will need to make a change to the Windows registry. Locate this Key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction

Change the Enable String from Y to N. This will stop BootOptimze from running and your layout.ini files as laid out by UltimateDefrag will remain untouched and in place.

If you are unsure about how to make changes to the registry please consult the Microsoft website for instructions on how to do this or have someone with knowledge perform the changes for you."

I also unchecked the "Optimise hard disk when idle" from the General Tab in TweakUi, although DiskTrix does not mention this at all.

Great program.. it allows me to customize my 4 drives exactly the way they need to be to improve performance.. for the power user it's great.

If you're one of them who have 3 spyware programs and 2 antiviruses, and thinks that one fragmented file will destroy your performance so you need something running all the time that will defragment your files on the fly, then all means spend money on diskeeper or whatever. :D :D   :D :p :p

open the Windows registry with START / RUN:
    regedit.

    Go to

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager

Delete in "Bootexecute" the value "oodbs", and "UDBDef"

Oh why not grnxnm, go ahead and share the knowledge. You're amongst friends here. :) That answer says it all anyway. ;)

I never seen a program yet that didn't conceal some form of easter-egg in it. :thumb:

I put Disk Keeper and Ultimate Defrag head-to-head and guess which one return the best results (for me anyway).

I also just learned of how to better strategically help in the file placement that ULTIMATE DEFRAG offers and i am but only too satisfied with those results.

Hi, folks: New release V.1.52 has been made available for all current users free of charge. Now it is Vista compatiable, and a NEW ICON. Cool.

For pity sakes, how many times will us XP loyals continue to have to be faced with that announcement, :doubt:

But thanks Perman for the announcement of the update. At least we can know to expect a NEW ICON.

This Super-Defrag is extremely good, works stable, and boy does it's file placement ever make my programs leap up quick!

Not to downgrade PD8 ( i have both Pd and UD ) but in comparison with UD its lightyears behind in terms off creativity, technology.I used to use PD for several years and i must admit its a great tool much better than windows own defrag, but boy o boy after my first defrag with UD it looks like a new rig on steroids, just on automatic options based on last accesstimes convinced me this thing is real out off the ordinary.Drivespace used is only 8%,what can you expect with customising this thing on a near full disk !!!

UltimateDefrag - is this the best defragger ever?

Downloaded and tried this program. Very impressive - all the options you could want, flashing lights to spare. But is it the best ? My conclusion is no.

Perfect disk does more than enough with far less fuss. The law of diminishing marginal returns is at play here I think. My only concern is that PD will now feel the need to provide the market with what it wants and will clutter up a good product with clever but not essential features.

in a way i am a poweruser batching big files (100 mb) in photoshop, difference before and after UD defrag is dramatic, not only this but everything flyes, most remarkable my normal noisy and grumbling HD became dead silent and still running my socks off,can you imagine i never looked back and PD will leave my rig.

How full is your drive ? Mine tend to operate at 20% or less.

as i said in my earlier post its 8 % used space more exactly 7,090909 %,its my understanding that the more used space the more the effects off good defragging becomes perceptible. But read the UD manual, everything is explained in detail, very thorough painstaking effort to let you understand.

Hi, folks: no, not I know of. From Eastern Canada/USA. disktrix.com

DiskTrix keep outdoing themselves. I updated and it's even quicker plus they resolved reported issues.

I am really settled on this now. Especially since my experience with PerfectDisk was less than what i expected, as in sudden reboot right after analyzing. That was a deal breaker for me.

DiskKeeper is alright too since someone posted a workaround for the DKService issue of it constantly accessing the Floppy Drive, boy what annoyance. Set the service to MANUAL and it's good to go. I don't need any defragger running all the time, that's just silly. Once is plenty.
