I am using a long time ago Avira, I am satisfied with it. Currently i am testing Nod32 beta. What i say is Avira is simpler, easier, most interactiver to use , Nod32 is rather with automatic working. I favor Avira. Other suggestions?

If you want ESS not to perform cleaning automatically, just set the cleaning level to 1 when ESS will prompt you for an action. At level 2 and 3, files are cleaned automatically.

Ahh...thanks...I now recall that Eset is changing NOD32's name. I don't think that is a good idea as the name has such a rich history. It doesn't seem right to change it...plus, the new name doesn't have much pizazz! Nor does the abbreviated form.

Maybe so, but I doubt it. They will probably change both for consistency.

I think they should keep the name NOD32 and bring back the pulsating alien blob! (That used to give me the creeps)! :D

Although NOD is a fine AV, I think that Avira, expecially with the new anti-rootkit component, is the better choice.

Hey C.S.J. - why do you avoid Avira? I would like to hear your view, as I am using the 6 month trial but encountering intractable update problems. I am really not sure if it's worth the hassle to persist with the product.

It may well be an issue with my ISP or my router, but I can't figure it out - but I've found the support from the Avira forum to be less than stellar. They barely acknowledge the problem, and put it back on the user's ISP. To me this is not up to par - if a fundamental part of their updates is getting clobbered during downloading, there is something wrong with the process - whether it be file naming they've used or whatever.

I've no doubt that Avira is a top product in detection. I would like to be using it, but fundamental problems with updating as I am experiencing mean that I may have to drop it.

So, between great virus detection with occasionally updating problems (Avira) and great updating with occasionally virus detection problems (NOD32) you are thinking about to drop Avira and keep NOD.

    Are you sure? :)

For me, the updating problems have been almost constant. I want a product that will work seamlessly for updates. There is obviously an update problem for a small percentage of Avira users, and the solution is elusive.

I would gladly sacrifice a few percentage points in detection for a product that doesn't require me to go in an do manual updates. Heck, I was using Trend Micro for a couple of years and it worked like a charm. It was only after coming to these forums that I learnt that its detection did not match the likes of NOD/KAV/Avira etc.

NOD32 isn't perfect, nor can it detect all malware on a given day. What's so funny about a factual statement? o_O :)

The same can be said for Avira or any AV. Reread Zimzi again, a backhanded compliment if there ever was one. This is what HiTech boy was responding to.

What I find funny me is those threads, Avira vs NOD, KAV vs NOD and so on.
No offense here HiTech_boy it's not directed at you.:)

It's always a matter of taste. It's like my wife vs your wife. The best is the one you like and go along with you.

I have been using Avira for several weeks now, and never had a FP. I don't deny that others have, but my experience has been excellent. I have also used it in the past, and again no FPs.
The one advantage of NOD, from my limited experience, is that it is more tolerant of other security programs.

    Best,
    Jerry

Jerry, be sure that false posites can happen!

It did happen to me with Avast long time ago that it noticed PG as a trojan.
And it is a very good antivirus too. So it can happen.

What one should not do is to put false positive to delete.
Instead wait, maybe quarantine, but never delete.

Avira antivir has not found any false positives as long as I have ran it though, 3 months or so, but I am a very conservative user who seldom installs new programs.

This is a fact :) Users whom develop a layered security setup tend to favour NOD 32 due to its friendliness with other security apps. Very few AVs have this gentle behaviour.
