Dan, to use a phrase from my younger years, 'right on'... RB is much more capable and useful than PowerShadow as an instant restore program; they are simply not of the same genre... I could understand Erik comparing RB to the likes of FD-ISR, RestoreIT, GoBack, etc., but not to virtualization software.

Have been using v8 since it first came out, and is running great. A whole lot better than 7.2.1. Received so many chkdsk's with the earlier build, I think I would have given up on it if the snapshot restore had not worked so well. Yet to have one with this new build, and the restore is just as dependable. Now when they get the backups and third party defrags working properly, it will be, IMO, the perfect recovery program.

Just a remark why I can´t ignore this program...My NOD32 licence is about to expire,to be sure if I will stay with it or not I´m now testing several other AV:s each on different snapshots...Kaspersky,Avast and will also take a looka on some other...Jumping between these snapshots and compare is really fascinating...

...performance,system smoothness, updating, scanning possibilities, signs, protection shield, configuring, boot&shutdown speed...(after playing some acc to the above I finally managed to config KAV properly and will probably stay with it...)

The two major problems that I had with v8 was that the snapshot restore (the major improvement in v8 ) didn't work, and if you did a snapshot defrag from within Windows it would corrupt all the snapshots. From what I can gather, this was a problem with early versions that was fixed in 7.2.1, but the fix didn't seem to carry over to v8. I am using 7.2.1 and will switch back when everything is working. BuckSnort: Do you have these same issues with v8?

I must be one of the lucky one's.No problems so far w/V8. With V8 I have been able to restore to any snapshot I want. No more chkdsk.(that was a major problem for me in V7)So far so good.

    I just uninstalled Rollback RX.
    I liked this program.
For me it did everything it was supposed to do.
    Fast and effectively.
I was going to buy it.
I thought it was kinda pricey so I searched around for a discount.
None available except on their site.
Give us referrals and we'll give you a discount.
Tell us how it helped you and get a discount.
A red flag as someone here said.
The more I thought about it, the more I didn't like it.
    Unsolicited e-mails to people I know---NO!
    To me that's spam.
Tell them how it's helped me-- when it hasn't yet--NO!
Would be a lie if I did.
Sent them an e-mail stating the same.
Be awhile before I get an answer, if I do at all.
Oh well, back to the drawing board!

    Questions for Rollback RX Users:

    1. How many snapshots do you keep on file?

    2. How many can you keep on file before you notice system slowdown?

Why? Because if I were to us it, I may want to take a snapshot every hour, and always keep 30 days od snapshots available to restore to. So that would be 720 snapshots always on file. Is this realistic?

IMO it would not be feasible to keep anyway near that many snapshots. Just because it is possible, doesn't necessarily make it a good idea. For one thing, it would be next to impossible to locate a specific snapshot.

I started out just taking them manually with V7, but now I take them hourly, and auto delete them after two days. The ones I take manually, I keep until I don't think I need them anymore. From what I have read in the Rollback forums, it will start slowing your system down. At what point, I don't know. The way I have it set up works best for me, but everyone has different needs.

Yes, you are right. 720 snapshots would be crazy to sort through. I might just take 2 a day and keep 2 weeks worth. My fear is that if I don;t keep enough, I might accidentally get infected and not discover it for 3 or 4 days. If I only have the last 2 days of snapshots, then every snapshot I have will be infected...

I agree with BuckSnort. After that many snapshots you don't really know the significance of each one. I do take hourly snapshots and then label and lock the ones that are important. Then I let the system delete unlocked snapshots after 2 weeks, but I manually delete some of them along the way. At some point then I review my locked snapshots and decide to unlock them. I don't think I ever have more than about 40 snapshots, both locked and unlocked, and I have not seen any system slowdown.

My primary use of Rollback RX is for trialing software and not as a defense against malware. Accordingly, I take a new snapshot after each installation of various software I am trialing at the time. I take the snapshot after installing the software on my installation snapshot, keeping my installation snapshot "clean" for future use. By labeling each snapshot with the program's name & viewing the snapshot history in the "tree view", I have been able to track them (so far).

Ask yourself this question: would I have bought the program had they just given me a discount? If your answer is "yes", then you should probably jsut pony up and buy it. Why expect a discount? The best products on the market tend to be pricey and you don't often get discounts on them. So if the program meets all of your needs and provides you the solutuon you want, I would go ahead and buy it.

On the other hand, if you have a real ethical dilemma with the company, then I wouldn't buy it no matter what the price.

Well put... While a discount makes the deal 'sweeter', it should never be the determining reason for purchasing a product.

Well put guys, and you are both right.
What made me look in the first place, was these forums. It was mentioned they had some discount offers in the past, so I figured I'd take a look.
Just to see what the final cost would be.
Remember, I live in Mi., the no econmy state! LOL!
Would I have bought it with even half off? Can't say for sure yet.
Been trialing FD-ISR also, and that program looks better all the time.
They both have their good points.
Basically, each of us has to go with what we think works the best for us.
Even if the cost is a little more. Good tech support is another must.

The default settings take one snapshot each day at system startup, and delete each unlocked snapshot after 7 days, so it doesent clog you with too many snapshots, but as you ask, you can take 60000 if your using the professional version, and 30000 with the standard

If I use RollbackRx Pro 7 last stable build and have my date separated to other partitions than my C drive, is it alright to set PerfectDisk to defrag these data partitions every week by schedule? I would not of course schedule any defrags of the C drive. Thanks.

    Hi Gary,

I'm not 100% sure of where you're coming from, so let me try to confirm what I think you're asking...

It sounds as if you have one physical drive partitioned into two or more logical units. If that is correct and if during setup you instructed Rollback Rx to only protect the C-partition* then there should be no problem using PD to defrag the partitions not protected by Rollback Rx.

*Unlike some other instant-restore programs, Rollback Rx is capable of protecting all Windows partitions on the physical C-drive or whichever partitions you designate (however, the C-partition is always protected by default).

    Hope that's clear! ~pv

Without going into too much detail that's likely been over the same ground before more than once, what are the immediate advantages of Rollback RX 8.

I installed it to an available Primary drive and am curious of it's effects and benefits. By the way, seems like a pretty good rollback program. I especially like the advantage of selecting individual files and folders to rollback to at will if i read it right.

    Thnx EASTER

Regarding defraggin data partitions, yes, I am talking of one physical drive and thank you for your answer. Sounds good.

At this point, I see no immediate advantage. The ability to restore individual folders/files is a feature already found in v7.2.1. Hypothetically, the two improvements of v8 over v7.x are:
    • v8 is (supposedly) Windows Vista compatible, but some Vista users are reporting problems with v8 (and I'm nowhere near considering Windows Vista).
    • v8 (supposedly) has the ability to save your snapshots to an external hard drive and recover them via a 'bare-metal' restore procedure. Here again, users are reporting various problems while attempting this procedure.
As i've mentioned in earlier posts, it's probably a sound idea to let others struggle with v8's 'infancy' problems before jumping into the water. Ultimately, v8 will be a killer product, but as v7.2.1 is stable and reliable I'll stay with it until v8's issues are resolved.

Very good to know. Thanks pvsurfer for that input.

I don't have Vista and i certainly take no interest in Vista for many various reasons not the least of which XP Pro can do nearly if not all that Vista can do & even better courtesy Third-Party Developers. Plus why waste time super-charging a PC system just to run it when you have so many more compatibilities with XP minus the distractions and other problems.

I will consider thanks to your advice about choosing the old version of Rollback. Vista compatibility in any program for me is a waste plus opens a door for potential conflicts.

If you haven't done so already, you can d/l v7.2.1 here and simply try it. All Rollback trials are full versions (they just expire in 30-days) ....and if you have any questions, just ask. ~pv
