ESS service startup type

I am evaluating the ESS beta. I was trying various ways to kill the service. I changed the service startup type to disabled using a command box. I didn't have the brains to query the original start type (boot, system, or auto) before I made the change. What is the proper start type? Can anybody tell me? I am assuming boot, so the system is protected from bootup. Of course, since I was too dumb to check ahead of time, I am probably wrong. Can anyone help?
