Paypal

Is there any info on here about Paypal.

I have never used it and am wondering what sort of strings are attached to getting an account with them.

I looked it up on Wikipedia and am not all that impressed.

 

I have an account with them. Keep a very small balance in it for the occasional e bay purchase. Never had a problem...but like I said, small balance, minimal use = little chance for problems.

This is/was a tool invented by Ebay to facilitate transactions. I've used Paypal to donate, & buy items not just ebay, it works very well. Paypal is as safe as online banking. Always look for that little 's' at the end of http, https = safe or secure. Hope this helps.

I would NEVER use a service such as PayPal if there is an option to pay by credit card or online bill pay from my bank.

Why give up the protection offerred by credit cards?

And, does not PayPal require access to one of your bank accounts?
If there's a problem, guess on whom the burden falls?

I pay by credit card and by online bill pay at Bank of America.
Only in an emergency, or where required by law, would I ever write a personal check.

Actually, your thinking is backwards, pp being much safer. So many times over the years I have purchased over the net and the vendor kept my card numbers (they required an account setup). With pp, the only one that has your card number is pp. Newegg, e.g. accepts it and you are only charged what the merchant is charging, plus the vendor will never see your card info, they just receive the $ from pp!

 

I like using PayPal any and every time I can. First you are verified through your bank and credit card for PayPal so others can trust you. 2nd I like the fact I do not have to give my credit card number out. Some sites I have doubts about (overseas) do not get my credit card number. There is also a new security key out for PayPal and Ebay that's a must have to boost security to a whole new level. Keep using your credit card number on line and the odds are sooner or later you will lose it.

 

I've used Paypal for most of my ebay purchases. Never had an issue with incorrect transactions or fraud. It provides you another means to pay for online purchases. While there will always be security issues with any payment source (whether it be credit card, check, cash, etc.), I think you could still encounter fraud if you use other non-online payment methods.

 

today i read about a new keyfob secuirty device for paypal.
it creates a i think it was a 6 digit code that changes every 30seconds.
so when you sign in you have to put the code in as well.

So first I need to get a credit card so that I don't have to use it. There is a profound logic to that somewhere. First I need to get over the hurdle of having people trust me before I can give them sum munny.

 

Hmmm.... Your comment begs the question: Well how have you been conducting your ecommerce without a credit card?

Paypal has be the subject of several types of fraud. Not Paypal itself but by online crooks taking advantage of flaws in the way Paypal does business. Now on the other hand I use a credit card for all of my online purchases and am fully protected against fraudulant charges. I have read some real horror stories about people that have gotten caught in the paypal problems trying to get reinbursed for their loss.EDIT after reading the link in the above post ,it looks as if Paypal might not be as reputable as some people would like to think.

You would still have that protection with PP because they use your CC. There also seems to be some misconception that you have to keep up a balance. You can do it that way but it's not necessary. Lets face it, nothing is really safe. If you mail order over the phone, should the person you are speaking with be dishonest, they could just give your card numbers to a friend 100s of miles away over a pay phone and would probably never even be a suspect.

 

My only problem with Paypal is that it acts as a bank, but isn't regulated by bank rules. Which is why they deal with fraud so badly.

In any case, I would always use a credit card with paypal instead of a bank account. The credit card company will always reverse fraudulent charges right away while paypal is twiddling its thumbs with no promise of the return of your funds.
Virtual account numbers are also useful for online purchases.

 

If you use a checking account,use a second one with a limited balance instead of a main checking account.
Credit/Debit card works good also.

PayPal not being regulated like banks are is something I wasn't comfortable with at first.I limit the $ and I haven't had any trouble paying or being paid through PayPal so far.

PS By the way I have been using Paypal with my Master/Eurocard a few times.
No problems so far.
BUT DONT ANSWER ANY E-MAILS that says they comes from Paypal or E-Bay or what ever!
