My son and I build our own computers and get at least three times or more the value in doing so. My wife she is good for a good second hand HP or something.

When the Dells are running good they are Okay, they seem too over priced and the owners are struggling with tech support too much.

 

Mine is an old HP that was given to me about 4 years ago when a friend bought a new XP unit. It was at least 3 years old then and has outlasted the XP unit she replaced it with. It runs 24/7. I've made a few hardware upgrades, but the motherboard, processor, and first hard drive are original. Added a CDRW in place of the old CD drive, a new 10/100 ethernet card, a 5 port 2.0 USB card, and increased the RAM from 64MB to 160MB. Replaced the combined modem/sound card with an old Sound Blaster card (other PC needed a modem). Using 3 small internal HDs, each with a different OS, and an 80GB external drive for data and backups. It might be old and low power, but I couldn't ask for a more stable and reliable unit.

I chose self-built because I just built (my first) a Hi-Performance rig two months ago. I have purchased from numerous vendors in the past and they were all nightmares except for one.

I think you get a higher quality system building it yourself and you get to learn all about hardware and choose exactlty what you want. The best thing is watching it come to life when windows boots, overclocking the CPU, vid card, ram timings to see how far you can push it and be stable at a sensible voltage for 24/7 with out going into the danger zone. It has been a good learning experience and a lot of fun.

So much in fact I have become a addict with any hardware that goes into a computer and try to read all I can get my hands on. My new case came today for my next build, this one will have either a home made 3-loop water setup with a D-Tek Fuzion CPU block, two MCW-60 GPU water blocks, two Thermochill PA 120.3's with 1/2inch id barbs and two DDC-2 pumps or a TEC Chiller. I'm going to sit on things until after the first of the year to see what the hardware vendors are doing.

At the moment, I have 3 self built machines and one Compaq Presario.

My favorites are the self built machines.

 

Always built mine from days of DX4 CPUs, using best off the shelf components available. Tiger Direct and Newegg as well as local vendors in India have supplied me with parts. My current self built PCs are the latest Quad Core Extreme on MSI board and ancient dual XEON 99 vintage.

First PC I had was a Compaq - Ever since then I've built my own systems.
I learned everything I know from that Compaq because it was trash and would go kaboom on a regular basis.

 

I have several with one being a custom build from a local shop:

1) Compaq EVO mini-tower (circa 2002) Upgraded the HDD, put in a $40 AGP graphics card, and upped it to 2 GB RAM and it runs Vista now without a hitch...

2) Sony PCG-XG19 laptop (this is a tank) - still runs and went from W98 to XP Pro over its lifetime. Limited RAM and useless battery makes it a DVD player now.

3) Custom P111 system from 1999 - 2 20 GB HDDs, Win2K, and is used from time to time as test machine or doorstop depending on which is needed more at the moment...

I have a local computer shop build my computers according to information I provide. Have never had any problems and almost feel as if I personnaly built them myself. If I only had the knowledge!

Desktop:
Custom built but I hardly ever use it.

Laptops:

Compaq V2000. The old variety with the black back and silver insides. This machine had the worst build quality ever. The silver paint came off. The button for the pcima card popped out and would not go back in. I cut myself on the thing multiple times. Battery life out of the box was barely 1 and half hours. After a years of use, went down to 45 mins.

Lenovo Thinkpad R61i. This machine is awesome. Keyboard and trackpoint far better than on my Dell at work. Built like a tank. Feels a bit plastic-y but has a magnesium cover under the plastic.

Dell Latitude 630. Good machine but just cant match the Thinkpad's keyboard and the accuracy of the Thinkpad pointing trackpoint.

Sorry for the l-o-n-g delay, never thought to look back here till today, and only because I just noticed new postings.

My mistake, mobo is also Intel, D845GLVA with the i845 chipset. Somewhere along the line I was sure I did have something with Intel processor and chipset but an AMD mobo ... guess I'd better pay more attention to what I'm smoking.

 

IBM (pre Lenovo only!!) are some one of the best machines in my experience (at work, and privatively a laptop). For multi booting they are a god-send as they include capabilities to run older OS's easier than most.

Levono has quite big shoes to fill-could they eventually do it??

 

I should be able to let you know in a couple months. My plans call for the purchase of a new R60e factory customized.
My old T21 finally went to lap top heaven. I am not a gammer but do go mobile pretty often. If the Lenovos are as sturdy as the IBM T21s I see a very long happy future ahead of me and it.
