Newb here, and a couple of questions

I just dumped Norton Antivirus, and am in the process of testing NOD32.

I am neither expert nor novice with computers...I am somewhere in between.
I admit that NOD32 was a bit intimidating, but with Blackspear's tutorials, it wasn't bad at all.
Yet, compared to some of you folks, I look like a total novice!

My system is Windows XP, Pentium 4, 1.7Ghz, 640Mb RAM.
I also have Zonealarm Pro, Spybot, Windows Defender, and Ad-Aware.
I am on DSL.
I use Firefox, and don't "game." My computer use is pretty tame.

Everything above is completely up to date, and I run full system scans at least once per week. Norton never gave me any issues, but my subscription is running out, and I wanted to try something else.

I do have some questions.

1. I have run an "In depth analysis", and nothing was found. However, the CPU usage was distressing, ranging from 96% - 100%, with an occasional dip to 20%. It seemed to be really using the CPU, which is surprising, because NOD32 is reputed to be "light."

Is this normal?
It also required 32 minutes for this scan, which was surprising because Norton required about 10 minutes more. I expected NOD32 to severely out-perform Norton in speed--though I am not overly concerned about speed.

2. I assume NOD32 is "real time" protection. Is this correct?

3. Is a weekly full computer scan ok?

I will only comment on the cpu usage and speed, the others will comment on other points.

Any scan with advanced heuristics and runtime packers enabled is resource intensive as the code is being thoroughly emulated. Such a detailed analysis always takes time and CPU, depending on the complexity of the file. You can disable advanced heuristics for quick scans, but it will worsen detection capabilities.

 

Norton just scan extensions with smart scan mode i think. Smart scan has a big extension list but it's not same with all files.
NOD scans all types of files, inside archives and runtime packets too.
Marcos said the advanced heuristics can slow the scan time a lil' but it will guarantee much higher protection level than norton.

 

Moreover , NOD32's scan speed is much higher than the Norton's . NOD32 is one of the fastest scanners .

Wow, I am impressed with NOD32.

My computer starts much faster now, and I don't notice any slowdown. Nice!
As far as CPU usage, and the overall scan time, those aren't issues at all, because NOD is still faster than Norton, and the security appears to be excellent.
I will continue to test NOD, but I'm already sold on it.

Again, many thanks for the rapid response to my questions. I know that newbies can be...tedious.
I have some more questions about various computer/security issues (I promise to try searching for the answer before posting).

Oh, I did remove Norton using the removal tool. It was very easy.
I tried to use the winsock-thing, but for some reason it would not run for me.
Regardless, everything appears to be running beautifully.

Though my computer knowledge is limited, if anyone has any questions about anesthesiology or pain control...well, that is my area of expertise.

My 3 year old son is being a pain in the 'A' at the moment. Any advice would be gratefully received.

 

Intubation and a bottle of propofol (milk of amnesia) would be helpful.

Might have a problem with the wife, though...

 

I went the Norton route and still felt, well, confined. I think, or hope that most will see with the new suite is a less complicated setup, but with a added layer or two of protection. My advice, judge Nod after April 2, keeping in mind it is a beta. Really folks, it is only going to get better, so hang in their for the ride.

 

Trjam, do you mean that NOD32 will get better?

 

Trjam switch's antivirus alot.
nod32 is a great antivirus and i am a fan of it.
norton 2007 is alot better than the 2006 version but it still cant beat nod32
