Registry Cleaners/Tweakers 2007

I use the usual suspects, jv16, CCleaner, Easy Cleaner and what I think is probably the best, Fix-It Utilities V4.

Hi! What are the views about Eusing Free Registry Cleaner. Is it safe? too aggresive?
Also is it Ok to delete red values in RegSeeker?

I ditched RegSeeker, not because it's one of the most aggressive registry cleaners, but because this software is developped by a poor programmer and I'm talking about the program itself, not about the registry cleaning.
It's freeware, but I also have my principles and I saw things in RegSeeker, which are for me unacceptable.

 

What is the poor programing and what is unacceptable in it?

 

I already mentioned this at Wilders and I'm not going to repeat myself anymore.
There have been alot of discussions about registry cleaners since I'm a member.
As long the majority of users and registry-cleaner-programmers have only one goal : removing as many registries as possible and don't want to see anything else, I'm not going to fight against mills, like Don Quichote.

CCleaner here... not because its better than the rest (because i cannot comment on this because i havent tried any to be honest)... use CCleaner to clean the crap... and it has registry cleaner in it as well, so just run that while I'm at it.

CCleaner has a registry cleaner indeed, but I wouldn't qualify it as a complete registry cleaner and some users don't trust it.

 

System Cleaner 5.53 Hunts out 1000's of Junk and Obsolete Files, and has several methods of Cleaning, from Basic 1 pass Cleaning to Guttman 37 pass cleaning, It is extremely safe, has a registry defrag also, as well as registry backup, and best of all its Windows Vista Compatible 100%

I personally think this is sound advice. I have never used EC v2 but the first 2 on that list are the only 2 I have used (on others PCs) and found to be satisfactory. If I did use a reg. cleaner, it would be one of those 2.

Somebody said they ran a scan immediately after installing windows. Well does it surprise you that a Windows OS would have a bunch of junk & invalid keys by default? Not me. It may be hard to believe, but you didn't need any of those 200 things it found I'd wager. And you won't need them later either, as any program you install from now till then will of course imbed it's own keys.

 

The question is : is it good and safe to remove all these unused registries, installed by Windows. Was that "somebody" a registry expert ?

I tested 21 popular registry cleaners on a fresh installed Windows and the scan reports were all different, going from 20 to 200+ registries.
In other words 21 different opinions, which programmer are you going to trust ? I don't even know these people. Why would I trust them ?
I put all these reported registries of Windows on IGNORE and I do the same for all other legitimate softwares.
These registries are not a threat and 200 registries is nothing compared with the total number of registries.

 

I'd wager that it's perfectly safe to get rid of them. And I'm quite sure that "somebody" is no expert, in fact the somebody I was refering to is in this thread and mentioned that they ran a registry scan immediately after a fresh install of windows xp.

I don't use them on my own PC either, but have on a couple friends PC that were all messed up with junk. I wanted to help them out but certainly wasn't going to manually go thru all that junk. I ran Registry Mechanic on these PC's and it didn't break anything, in fact it made them noticably faster after scanning & compacting the registry.

None of them are probably risks, but aren't neccessary either.

I'm not an expert in anything when it comes to computers, but I THINK about many subjects related to computers.
I have an analytical/logical mind without being a genius. I learned how to separate problems from one another and to solve them systematically.
I'm doing pretty good, when I read all these problems at Wilders, which I don't have. I'm still not finished with my setup, but that's a matter of time, as long there is progress, I stick to my plans.

Erik I use the same approach. I'm always looking for feedback from others that have "been there, done that", but ultimately my own T&E leads me to my conclusions and future decisions... and not what other people say.

For example, I just happened to have used RM on a friends PC and it seemed to do the job. It doesn't seem to make it a personal mission to delete anything that hasn't been used in the past week and a half like many will, it just got rid of leftover obsolete junk. My friends PC was an absolute mess and it was part of a multi-pronged quick fix solution.

People like you or I that actually pay attention to what gets on our PC's in the first place (imagine that concept)... don't have much of a need for them.

No I don't use only FDISR, I have a security setup like anybody else, but I'm still working on it. It's hard to find the right softwares.

I am, what they call the average, less-knowledgeable user at Wilders, so when a problem (small or big) occurs, I don't know how to fix it and I also don't like to bother people with my problems.
So I use FDISR to fix all my problems, from little problems upto a BSOD.
I took care of my Image Backup first, then FDISR for Immediate System Recovery.
I also separated my system from data, I created an off-line snapshot to get rid of all Internet/Malware-related problems and now I'm working on my on-line snapshot, which is still a pain. I can't do it all at once, but I have a plan in my mind.

 

I am using RegistryFix V 5.5 seems to work good with Vista.
I just now downloaded the trial of RegRun 5 and started a scan.

 

For cleaning: AMUST Registry Cleaner
For tweaking: X-Setup Pro
