I have two. Emachine is younger and quicker but...

I like my Compaq 5000, even if it is old and tired. Purchased in mid 2001 I upgraded by reformat of factory ME with retail box XP home in 2003 (very good idea) added another memory card too.

Only parts that have been replaced are the HD and the CD burner. Both had to be transplanted as they went bad. The rest of it is all original except what is stated above that I added.

Will never buy another off of the shelf again. I get way to much enjoyment doing the research for the parts that will perform in harmony together. Then putting it together loading the OS of my choice and seeing it come to life for the first time. followed my adding only the applications I choose.
I build\run only fairly mid to higher-end machines. There is a point that you cross in the amount of money you plan to spend when it is still cheaper to build as opposed to buy.

 

Ive self-built two computers (thus far) and am proud of it. Its a joy to choose teh parts u want and then putting them all together.

 

Xplio (XP-pro) now, just buried my ol'Compaq (98SE->XP-home).... Hope this one can last through 2 OS'es too!!!

 

I voted for self-built, but I think that the proper name would be "self-assembled", as I didn't build parts myself, Asus and AMD did (and other respective vendors). I just assembled 4 or 5 parts together in a box in 15 minutes and plugged the wires. Not really any building skills in that.

EDIT: OK, maybe 20 minutes.

 

I choosed the parts, but the store assembled it for me.
So it isn't self-built. It's built, but it wasn't me. It's a dilemma.

 

Self-built.

Even though it was a pain at times, I controlled exactly what went into the system, know the system inside and out, and probably have a faster more capable machine for less money than if I purchased a system pre-built.

Hardware compatibility is not much of an issue in 21st century. You should've been there 15-20 years ago, boy that were some issues. In choosing your hardware, one should always ask himself "what will I be using this comp for?"
Vast majority of PCs sold today are used as a common household necessity for internet, music and films and last but not least, playing games. For this kind of operations, you can pretty much pick any components from a shelf and chances are that they will perform flawlessly together. Of course, you will need some inquiring, but that can be done in a day or two also. So, hardware is nowadays very user-friendly, with tendentions to be more so. There are a few distinguished sites (as Wilders is in its branch ) where you can learn everything you need to help you assebmle your system in a very short time.

I have a Dell bitburner.

Had some problems in the beginning, but now these issues have been solved I'm very satisfied with my rig.

 

I've had the same computer now for years.
Its had a few new oses, motherboards, hard disks, cards, readers and boxes.

Seriously though I did vote self-built and also have hp, compaq, Packard-Bell, sony and various vintage. Compaqs are quite nice as its like buying a hp at half the price.

 

Self Built. Planning a new one, but waiting for a true 4 core cpu from intel along with their Bearlake chipset.

By the way, ever consider this?

Believe it or not, yes. This is a bit extreme solution, but I have much interest in liquid cooling ever since the first gossips started to appear a few years ago. You may also find this little gadget interesting. There are other solutions also, and although I don't find liquid cooling to be necessary with even the highest-end hardware at this point in time, this is definitely the future here. In a few years, we will all have liquid coolers on our systems (or our systems submerged in them ).

EDIT: That DIY Oil PC could than have two purposes in that no-so-far future - I can have my genuine AMD or Intel fried french-fries and fish sticks. Multitasking in its own league.

 

At one time I had two computer repair shops and from the experience I had working on all brands of computers i have come to the realization that I worked on Hewlitt-Packard less than any other brand. So the last five computers that I have owned were HP's and never had a problem with them.

Have you thought about changing parts on that thing? Cleaning?

 

Self-built. Like 4-5 years ago. Still going strong. Quality parts: Antec PSU & case (2 - 120cm fans in/out), Asus, AMD & Crucial RAM.

Don´t buy from big OEMs (Dell, HP, etc), buy from small OEMs instead:
- Velocity Micro
- Puget Systems
- Alienware (Dell owned), VoodooPC (HP owned), etc.

 

I bought a Dell Dimension 4600 ala carte from their site. So you could say I built my own and used a sub contractor. It was hairy at first, because I had to return the computer for a replacement, and had to endure 10 hours on the phone with a few "tech" people in India, and after a year had to send the monitor back for a replacement. But now I have it humming along nicely.
