I really don't switch as much as I pretend. I have really stuck by their suite, knowing some issues but not commenting on them. They do have a great AV, it does have a high rate of false positives. But last night was the kicker. My daughter had been on doing a few things and when I came over to the computer, the umbrella was deflated. I opened it up and it said Mail Guard wasn't started and the firewall wasn't installed. I have seen this on a few occasions. All of which were fine before she got on. I have just had my fill of having to periodically repair the frigging suite and dumped it. I am really tired of having to do anything special beyond installing the application of any vendor, and just expecting it to work.

I am just going to take the simple approach to this and have downloaded Norton's AV to trial. It seems fine and in the end, I may just stick with it and quit being obsessed with this stuff anyway. At least, my little green friend would be happy.:cautious:

When I trialled Avira, all three versions, I really liked it until similar problems started. I could never get them corrected except for a short period.
It is too bad that the developers of such an otherwise excellent AV cannot get such problems corrected.

    Regards,
    Jerry

Oh why oh why would you switch to Norton when you have far superior replacements like KAV and NOD32?!!

Ok joking aside, Antivir is a great program (awesome detection rates) and I use a free version on one of my low-threat secondary PCs.

I know Avira is a small company but it seems that really need to iron out some of the bugs in the program. It is really holding them back.

I think Avira is a great, free a/v.I have never had an update problem with manual. All I want is a good a/v from them as suites are not for me.

Do you mean that free version (only AV - PersonalEdition Classic)
    has similar problems?
I didn't encounter such at work where they use it....

:) Key word was trial. I do have a Nod license. I also saw in Aantivirs support forum where some big download is due this week to correct the firewall not installed problem. I really dont know at this point, the people and the AV are great their., but the firewall is what pains me.

I had the umbrella stuff too... And the main thing that puts me off is that Avira now issued a statement on their website that they only will support the 32bit's Vista (as of April)... What a bummer!

Similar story for me ,only i used antivir premium with 98se.To much grief and lottery, not knowing whether the next update would "break" it .Changed to AVG and upgraded to the suite ,and haven't looked back.If a product is not wholly reliable then detection rates are pretty much superfluous in my view.

I am using free version. No significant problrms but I do read similar issues here off and on. Any good security software should be install and forget. It,s rather stupid if u have to fix a security software every other week.

but trying to be fair. All the issues I have gone through, have dealt with their suite, not their AV.

I will not choose anything except KAV or NOD32 if I have to pay.

get back to the doctor trjam, it may not be the best on av-comparatives, but it has more pros than cons and bug-free is usually one of the pros. :D

I personally don´t like AntiVir´s architecture, with that I mean that I will have to make a whole lot of rules in firewall and HIPS everytime I upgrade it. And the thing is you are forced to upgrade everytime you download new signatures. This is stupid. I also don´t like the fact that my ZA trayicon keeps showing me network traffic when the AVguard is active. Plus I don´t really think that the developers are open to suggestions.

Well I put Nod on today, and it has already updated twice. I dont think I ever saw this. These guys must be busy with adding stuff. I have to admit, it is nice to have HTTP scanning again, rootkit detection, and all of the good folks here behind me. Yep, you will know it is for real when you see the eye appear for my avatar. I do wish for news on their suite though. But hopefully with a firewall not as aggravating as Aviras. Otherwise just keep going like you are.:)

    Hi Trans,

I found the same or similar problems with all three versions. I realize that many/most users do not have problems, but I did. If it runs well it is a fine AV.

    Regards,
    Jerry
