what File Compression program do you use?

I use IZarc, not for compression, but decompression.
I have WinRAR too, because it was free to get once upon a time on the internet, but I don't use it. I'm not really a compressor.

 

7zip, and Win RAR very rarely.

For extraction, try Extract Now. Freeware, very small.

Winrar. Havent found a need for anything else.

 

Wow, just found peazip with the paq8f compression and it is really impressive on how small it compresses things. However, if you use it (the paq8f algorithm that is), make sure you keep it at the default compression level, as this will already take a very very very very very long time to compress things, while taking a boat load of cpu.

I have TUGZip. It does its job effectively and it has many features that others don't have.

 

Why wasn't the program that is built into XP listed as a choice?

Am I the only person here with some sense?! I use what is built into XP for decompression and compression. It is excellent. I had WinRar and what is built into XP is just as good and much easier to use so I got rid of WinRar. I can't imagine paying for something when XP already has it built in and it works fine...no problems so no need to waste money...I'll spend that money on something that XP doesn't have that I'd like to have.

 

Depends on what you want to achieve.
XPs is fine until you need to do something it cannot do.

 

I use WinRar simply because it works best for me.

I use the compression utility in PowerDesk.

But that can't decompress .rar files can it? In my experience, most of the zipped archives found on the internet are now .rar files. At least, there are just as many .rar files as there .zip files.

 

7-Zip has better compression rate, but WinRAR supports more formats. I voted for WinRAR.

Smart man. You can unzip everything (IZarc for what 7-zip can't) and zip with enough compression rate (7-zip).

That's not compression

It is an archiver (puts everything in one file), but doesn't really compress the data.

It's orginial intension was to write to tape drives (that is where it got its name from, tape archiver)

You probably mean gzip or bzip2 since those are the most commonly used compression algorithms that are used along with tar archives.

I use already IZArc, but I will install 7-zip too, because I want to be a smart man too, at least an imitation of it.

 

lol, IZarc seems good enough for everything, but apparently 7-Zip has better compression. IZarc however can decompress pretty much everything, while 7-Zip can't.
This is one of those "choices" i made reading from Gizmo's Tech Alert.

 

PKWare is offering a free copy of SecureZIP. It is both a compression and encryption program.

FirstDefense-ISR compressed my system partition [C:] completely.
Almost every file is blue now instead of black. It looks like the Atlantic Ocean.
I have now 25% more space on my 74gb harddisk.
My compressed on-line snapshot is even frozen and it was almost encrypted as well, but encryption was useless for me.
Can you imagine a frozen, compressed, encrypted, on-line snapshot at 10000 rpm ? That's like a comet.

Normally I use IZArc for simple compression or de-compression.

 

I have winrar, 7zip, stuffit, gzip and various archivers.
