Disk-to-Disk Backup (RAID 1)

Hello,

I'm wondering why you should use Acronis True Image if you can use a RAID 1 mirror. Then, when one hdd crashes, you can continue working with the other. Practically you won't have any hassle of a crash.

Please, provide your answers.

 

RAID 1 will not protect you from data corruption. A backup in TI can come very handy there.

 

RAID 1 will also not protect you against a virus attack or a program install gone wrong, or human error, or general Windows corruption, etc.

Also, if the RAID card went bad and corrupted the drives, they would both be bad. (I've had a drive corrupted beyond fixing when a controller card failed.)

It's always a good idea to have a backup (or two, or three...) so you can quickly go back to a good working state if a disaster strikes.

 

I'm with the previous two posters. RAID 1 protects you in the event of failure of one hard drive. But software problems requiring image restoration are at least 20 times more common than hard drive failure. On my computers anyway.

RAID 1 is not a backup solution.

I just got finished restoring my PC after a program error completely trashed the NTFS filesystem on my C drive. I had a RAID 1 (mirror) array also, and ended up with a perfect copy of garbage on both hard drives. So although RAID 1 will protect against the failure of one hard drive, it won't do anything at all to protect you from errant programs that write nonsense to the disk.

Fortunately, I only needed to restore the C drive (the corruption did not affect my data partition) using TI10 and was back in business 15 minutes later.
