WWDC, Seconfig and Bug off needed or not?

Well put, TheTom. I agree with you on all points.

 

I am using both SafeXP and XP antispy. I am not sure if its, OK or not. BTW no problems so far. I don,t use all of their options, only half of them or even less I think.

 

It,s totally GUI based.

 

i tried SafeXP but it caused me some minor problems.

both have unique options so try each of them and see how they work on your comp.

 

Don't forget Security & Privacy Complete. It's similar to SafeXP.

Thanks WSFuser. It's confusing comparing the two. I'll see what i choose in one and see if i got that in the other. Simpler

 

How I can ompletely reverse sttings made by WWDC. I want to go back to default XP settings but I don,t remember exactly these settings. I tried and now I am getting the settings as shown in this snapshot. Are these default XP settings? Do I need to do something more?

Thanks for the link to the Security & Privacy app, didn´t know about it, I like the simple interface, I wish Samurai and XP AntiSpy would look like this.

And btw, is it still necessary to use BugOff? I always use it to disable the various protocols on all of my machines, but I´m not sure if these things are already patched or not.

to completely go to default enable Messenger, but yes those setting should be right.

 

Thanks. I think disabling messenger will not let me loose any functionality.
I tried WWDC on my friends desktop and I get these settings. What u say about this?

 

Seems like everything should be red or yellow except Messenger. I thought Messenger was disabled by default with XP Service Pack 2.

 

I am confused about second last option. Yellow or red?
What,s the difference. I see no way to get yellow here!!

 

aigle, Seconfig, XP-antispy... one of them

 

red = enabled
green = disabled
yellow = will be disabled or enabled on reboot

or at least i think that what it means.

 

This one is confusing as it stays same even after reboot.
May be gkweb can tell us something.

 

Next time, run Total Uninstall (or similar) before/after making any changes with such tweaking programs. That way, you will know exactly what was done, and will have to ability to reverse the changes.

Out of all of these programs, I was attracted to SafeXP because it runs on Win9x. Most of the others (except for BugOff) do not.

Well, I tried it last night on Windows 98 SE before shutting down. Today I turned that computer on and ran netstat again to see if anything had changed. Instead of closing ports, which is what I was hoping, a new port is now open-- port 68 (for TCP and UDP).

U are right but the interface of WWDC is really bad. No option to save settings or revert back like SafeXP or XP Antispy.

 

You can make before/after screens.

 

With WWDC there is no real need to save settings per say since all it's doing is the same thing We can do as a user manually. For instance the Messenger selection in WWDC. If it is showing enabled with WWDC and you select to disable it in WWDC....it disables the Messenger Service the same as if you went into services.msc and disabled it yourself. On the flip side....if it is showing disabled in WWDC and you choose to re-enable it in WWDC it simply places the Messenger service back to Automatic. All this is being done to the same associated registry entries that We would be altering if We did these changes manually.
