Friend of mine in Holland wants me to try skype out with him - free internet phone thing supposedly... I checked out the page (I am putting a disabled link just because it's prudent) xxx.skype.com Firstly; the free aspect made me wonder a bit; secondly the fact it comes "from the people who brought you kazaa"... I remember watching the huge debacle with kazaa trojans and thought I'd rather not try this software yet... Maybe someone here has knowledge or possibly would enjoy testing? It's all beyond Detox Anyway just wondering and hope this is the right forum section
i have read some ppl having great success with this program. that's all i can tell you unfortunately.
you might want to look at the skype ---SIPphone review at this link. http://www.extremetech.com/ the article is the fourth down on the left
Thanks guys; and nice link Bigc! Looks like it's got good marks there.. Reckon they would check for something like spyware in it?
It's from the Kazaa people... My experiences are mixed. Quality may be far better than regular telephone. However, we also experience very bad lines. To me it seems to depend on the upload speed of both connections. One fast and one slow line result in bad sound on the fast uplink system. So best bet is to just try. Besides, it's got some instant messaging to compensate for a bad line (funny, me speaking in the microphone and a collegue typing away on his keyboard , my line is faster )
Thanks guys. I've been pondering trying Skype, and have read the feedback, links etc. provided both here and on cexx.org, without having found any serious arguments against it, foistware wise. Never used kazaa. I don't mind at all sharing some pc-resources in return for trying out a good, free (for now?) program - if that is all there is to it. Just as I have paid for the pro-version of several good programs, after trying out the free version first. One question remains, will my phone company/isp allow it - cannot find anything specific on their site. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, you guys are just plain cool! Whenever I am recommended a new "killer" app etc., especially freebies, I immediately come here and check for references. And have recommended you many places. And fwiw - am really impressed with this YaBB platform as well. Lars
