Help with Licensing

Hi!

I'd like to use the beta on Vista on a new computer. I am a licensed user through Raxco. I saw in another thread that you said to install the licensed version, uninstall, and install the beta.

However, Vista is already installed, and the licensed version of FDR will not install. How can make my beta copy licensed? Is there a file/registry key or something I can copy from my old computer before I reformat its hard drive to sell it?

Good question. I think the best way would be to install a minimal XP, say from nLite, then install your registered First Defense, then do an upgrade install of Vista, then install the new beta on Vista. That worked for me and will leave you with a clean Vista install, except for FD-ISR, after you delete the windows.old file from the Vista installation.

 

I have just gone through a painstaking procedure to get the beta to work without the 14 day trial on Vista:

1. Formatted the drive.
2. Installed Vista.
3. Installed the Leapfrog Beta
4. Imported my snapshot of WinXP
5. Booted into the imported XP
6. Uninstalled the Leapfrog beta and installed my bought version of Raxco (from 2005) to get the reigistration right.
7. Uninstalled the first version
8. Installed the next Raxco version (build 164)
9. Installed the update (to build.166)
10. Uninstalled it.
11. Installed the Leapfrog 1.10.173 version.
12. Uninstalled it
13. Installed the latest leapfrog beta

Phew, but now I have clean Vista and Clean XP snapshot at least (without the spacewasting windows.old and other old folders)

One better take real good care of the Raxco FDISR original file you get when you buy it, if that one is lost you´re screwed. Raxco doesn't remember me as a customer anymore
Luckily I have a online hard drive where I store all my bought software.

 

That is painstaking! Sheesh...Leapfrog, can you help us out?

Maybe you dont have to go through all those steps, I guess it depends on your version of Firstdefense.
I have a two year old version so I have to walk through the versions because the leapfrog beta wont take the registration info if I install it before done all the things I´ve mentioned.

If you have bought the Raxco .166 build you can install the beta I guess. I installed the Leapfrog .173 version just in case, maybe that is not necessary but that is the build I had when I tried the beta the first time.

 

And you don't have a receipt anymore... How about faxing them the label of the installation CD?

 

As usual it is my fault, I tried again, because I noticed I had put sweden in the field where it said "state" it should be "other" in my case.
And now they recognized me, but that didnt help me:

It looks like I have had it installed for 620 days
I totally forgot about the software assurance thing where you pay extra to get the right to download the retail version later.
Thats no biggie for me since I have it on a online hard drive so it never gets misplaced.
The "problem" with Firstdefense is that you never need to reformat the drive again once it is installed, so one, well me at least tends to forget the procedure to do a clean install of FDISR

 

Saw this thread and have same licensing problem.

I purchased First Defense through Raxco, 11/27/2006,
for use on a XP 32 bit machine, great product, and I was
singing its praises to friends, family, and my boss.

My Boss than asked me to update my computer to Vista
Ultimate to get some idea how we could incorporate it for
work, so I comply, than I saw the beta link for Vista off the
Leapfrog site, but I already had Vista installed, so I thought
great maybe Leapfrog can provide a paid customer with a
license key, simple right, WRONG, email response was that
Raxco embeds their license keys, and Leapfrog cant help,
so than I contact Raxco thinking paid product support
actually means something, but nope WRONG again, all
they provide is a link to download the beta.

So I followed the beta instructions jumped through a bunch
a loops with a reformat, restored a XP 32 image, installed Vista
64, and after struggling with it for hours I still can not get the
beta to recognize the license, on the plus side though the
beta works great on Vista x 64, bad news is my trial ends
in fourteen days.

edited to add: I uninstalled Vista x 64 followed the beta instructions
installed Vista x 32 in a empty snapshot and beta took
my licensed version so guess problem I experienced was
due the Vista x 64 version.

 

Hmm.. all I had to do was:

1. Install the Beta on Vista
2. Create a blank snapshot and install XP
3. Install and uninstall the current Raxco version in XP
4. Install the beta

Since I was going to install XP in a new snapshot anyway, the only real inconvenience was one install and uninstall (for me, anyway).

Since all you're doing is getting the registration info on the system, I'm not sure that doing all the updates would really be necessary. The whole process took me about 30-45 mins, and most of that was waiting for XP to install.
