Hi folks,its that dumb brit again...the last couple of times I have started the pc I get this error message as the desktop appears"Stmgr has caused an error in WINTRUST.DLL and will close",you may need to restart your computer (which doesn't make any difference!).
I know you guys are really concerned with security issues and I'm still grateful for the help you gave me in recovering the address bar seach that I lost due to a hijack,but when it comes to Windows I don't think there are a better group of people to ask...any thoughts?

In the meantime i've been looking a few moments at your other hijackthis thread here and it looks like the file you did something with, don't you think?
Maybe it's just a setting now to be corrected.

I am not an expert, but I have been working with WinTrust and the CryptoAPI which it is based on lately. Perhaps I might offer something useful. What appears to me to be happening is that STMgr is trying to verify the authenticity and integrity of the files on the file system. It appears that most of the problems show after someone does an install. This is STMgr doing its job and attempting to maintain a stable state of OS files (namely dlls which are overwritten during an install of a 3rd party app or driver). It presumably uses WinTrust to create and check hash values -- one decrypted from a digital certificate and one calculated from the file -- to determine if the file has been modified or replaced. It could be that STMgr isn't as production-quality as MS would like it to be, and perhaps they released it anyway. On the otherhand, perhaps permissions on the files or with the certificates has something to do with it. Also, which version of encryption does your IE have? Mixing 40-bit with 128-bit would cause instability, at least. Installing the high-encryption pack might alleviate problems...

also is your PC a Dell??

 

I checked msconfig and "selective startup" is ticked but "load statrtup group items "is greyed out.
Also on the advanced tab "enable startup menu "is ticked...I have no idea why?

 

Is your system restore enabled or disabled at this time> and do you have the patch for it that was issued long ago..or did you have to reinstall that OS anytime recently and lose the patch at that time?

Try Disableing WinME's System Restore...

Goto Control Pannel.... System... Proformance Tab....
File System Button.... Trouble Shooting Tab... Check the
Box to Disable System Restore...

 

Its 128 bit and no its not a dell(its made by a uk company called TIME ) but they are probably just as bad!

 

Having read the links on "annoyances" I have to say that the error occurred the other night when I was at windows update getting the patch for I.E.6.0 and the Media Player update( it happened as I was downloading )

The first thing is to forget about using system restore to roll back your system to any checkpoint that might exist as unless stmgr.exe has been running continuously when the system is running since a checkpoint was created the audit trail will be broken.

So how to fix this problem. At what point do you see this error message? When you load your system or at some time subsequent to that during a normal session? Have you at any time attempted to modify the file FileList.xml? Whilst unlikely to be the cause of your problem have you installed the 290700 patch to update smgr.dll? If not as a first step may I suggest you do so as without it running system restore is pointless since any checkpoints created since 8 Sept 2001 will otherwise be useless and installing this patch will reset system restore and should rebuild its control files which may be all that is required to fix your problem.

You can see whether you have installed the patch or not by checking the version of the file smgr.dll in your windows\system folder. If v4.90.0.3003 then you have updated but if v4.90.0.2533 you have not and need to do so at once. Note that when installing the patch it will flush your restore folder and create a single new checkpoint on completion. This cannot be avoided since checkpoints created with the old version of smgr.dll cannot be restored.

It is also possible that at one stage you did install this patch but have subsequently reinstalled Win Me over itself using the Win Me CD. Doing this causes the original, broken, version of smgr.dll to be reinstalled.

If required the patch can be obtained either via Win Me's AutoUpdate, the Windows Update site or from the Microsoft Corporate Update site. For more details see MS KB 290700 - "Checkpoints That You Create After September 8,

Please post back and let us know whether installing or reinstalling the patch reset system restore and whether you are still seeing that error message and if so at what point after booting your system.

Lol...just had to insert this...Primrose says at the beginning, "I'm no expert, but..." After reading this. either Primrose is unbeliveably humble or actually an expert. I say the latter....carry on folks.

 

OK,sorry been away(dog bite makes typing difficult!)am unable to uncheck system restore(I do it and then when I check it ,it has re-ticked itself!!!).
error message comes up as I start the pc(when I get to the logon screen)have also had "sucatreg has caused an error in etc).
version of smgr is 4.90.0.3003.
