With the release of Windows Vista what are the security needs then?

Vista comes with a more developed firewall and windows defender.

What would be the best overall combination for the "midway" surfer?

    NIS 07
    TMIS 07
    Winfirewall + Windefender + Nod32

or other... (are there more vista ready av's/siutes? let me know :))

IMO "Winfirewall + Windefender + Nod32" combination would be a VERY light combination. I dont have any doubts in Nod32 but in the WinFW and WinAS. Together though the WinAS combined with nod32 would perform good aginst spyware i guess...:)

Windows Vista seems to be a really secure mostly relying on users intervention . With all the askings wheter to run stuff or not one can be really secure . Let's not forget that an antivirus is still needed . Good article here .

By default Windows firewall is set to protect only against incoming attacks (as on Win XP) . You should manually enabled and configure outgoing protection. Windows Defender ... is Windows Defender :D

I would choose more secure OS + its firewall + NOD32
When I get Vista I would completely disable Windows Defeder (its service) , hope it is possible as in Win XP .

I think lots of companies are ready with their Vista products

I've read that is possible easily to disable windows defender :thumb: I just have no clue how good it actually is compared to the other AS out there

I was doing a quick search and neither Comodo, Zonealarm, F-Secure or Kaspersky are Vista ready yet. Neither are Kerio 2.1.5 :D (and yes I know it wont be... :p)

But of course the other companies will soon have their arsenal vista ready ;)

    That's good :)

Compared to others , it is definitely worse then most other AS softwares .

Here are the security vendors (AVs) who could protect Vista while on RC1
    http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/update/windowsvistaRC1AV.mspx
From then on ESET - ready . Panda , Symantec , McAfee , CA , Grisoft - ready . Adobe , Nero - ready . Microsoft products - ready :) and plenty others . But don't worry . I'm sure you will need to wait no more than some months until all your favourite software become available

    Re: Vista Comming...

Of course Vista adds some interesting security features, like UAC, MIC and PatchGuard (only 64 bit version).

UAC should be, more or less, a "better" developed version of limited accounts in 2000/XP/2003 versions of Windows.

However, I think that MIC is the cooler thing :) As you know, every process is associated with an integrity level. Lower levels can't modify processes with higher integrity levels.

Every software launched by user is associated by default with a medium integrity level, except Internet Explorer 7 that's set to a low integrity level. (If you install other browsers like Firefox, it's set to medium integrity level by default).

However, every software downloaded by internet is set to a medium integrity level. This means that every software downloaded by internet can inject code into medium level processes - that means a lot of processes :D

So, for example, a user mode rootkit could exists - like a user mode rootkit could exists in a limited user account into previous versions of Windows :)

If you think that however a medium integrity level can't write into windows registry (so can't start at windows startup) well...it isn't the only way :D

And, moreover, 32 bit version of Vista hasn't any kernel protection - this could be a good point and a bad point, depends on how do you feel with patchguard :)

I think that a antivirus software is still needed  :) At least a HIPS :)

By the way , reading through Microsoft newsgroups I found Microsoft is most likely working on Vista Service Pack 1 . According to some people , Vista SP1 supposed to appear in 4Q of 2007 (but I personally doubt)

Glad I am not the only one reading that. Have read they are already looking for SP1 early Beta testers.

64 bit on a properly hardware configured PC will run faster and have heard it is more stable. Like XP 64 there is little third party driver support. It is also lacking in support for a lot of commonly used security apps. There are also some additional built in security features not available in Vista 32 bit. As far as graphics, 10X is the next new\big thing coming down the road. To my understanding both 32 and 64 will support it. However, there are few if any third party programs, games for example, that have made the jump to 10X as of yet.

if you wait long enough wont most people use 64bit?
since my old 3200 amd processer is 64bit and its two years old.
so soon enough most people wont bother with 32bit since it cant support more than a certain amount of ram i cant remember the amount of ram in gb atm thou.
but i know that 64bit can support alot more ram.
in the end we are gonna see like over 10gb ram sticks:D
sure atm you only need like 2gb to do alot and most people only need 1gb or less.
but you have got to think of the future

32 bit with the proper mobo will support up to 4 gig depending on the OS. However Windows 2k and XP will only report about 3.5 Gigs.
There are server type mobos` that state they will support 2 gig modules though I have yet to see any offered retail.

    Re: Vista Comming...

How can 64bit be more stable than 32bit?

Also for third party programs like antivirus, firewall etc... well will it be easier for programs to developo_O and be easier to develop there firewalls, antivirus etc....

Also i heard that Vista has made it more difficult for third party programs to develop there programs?

would that be a problem? like for example i use Kaspersky, Comodo etc...?

Also then Comodo and kaspersky would be more secure and much more stable in Vista than XP?

P.s Tomorrow is the big day :D (i wonder how many ppl will report bugs on the day :shifty:

Sorry, I am not a programmer and not sure just how it is done myself. Just passing along what I have read.

Again, sorry, do not know. I am guessing that if it were "easier" or more in demand then there would not be a shortage 3rd party software support.

Many security software companies have complained. It has to do with how their programs and how they interact with the Vista kernel. MS has changed things at that level in order to better secure the OS. Not all security programs require access to the OS at that level so it was easier to adapt their existing program to Vista

I can only speak of Nod32 for certain. It is Vista compatible. However I do not recall if it is 64bit software com

If a program is designed properly for the OS then there should not be an issue for either OS and program

I am just glad I no longer work on PCs` for a living. I have no need or desire to run out and get Vista.

is your upgrade coming through that 'moduslink' place like the HP upgrades are? If so, prepare to wait a bit.. Shipments coming from there will start 2nd week of February and last shipment set to leave approximately late March based on #'s and customer rep. statement today.

    Re: Vista Comming...

So, will software that's designed for XP work on Vista? Or do I have to buy everything all over again?

Same question applies to 64 bit systems. Will 16 and 32 bit programs still work well? I'm guessing the answer is yes, right? Silly question, I know!

Much of the 32 bit software will work on Vista. Security apps. are\can be a bit of a different story though as they interact with the OS at a different level.

Many 32 bit programs will work with 64 bit hardware as it is backwards compatible but not with 64 bit software like Vista since it is two different things.
If the company that created the programs, 16\32 bit, is still in business it is up to them whether they offer a free\reduced price upgrade for Vista. I have spoken to many people, including small business owners who still maintain a Win 98 PC just to be able to run some 16 bit programs that they rely on and do not wish to\ can not afford to replace with a newer program.

i have been begging someone here or at DSLR to creat some nice custom rules for our Vista's but can not get any takers and so I did a bit of my own.
see attached TXT file. It just needs to be renamed DOT(wfw)and imported into Vista's firewall with the import tab.
By default most outgoing rules and a lot of incomming rules are disabled but say allow. I don't know what that means so to be safe, I enabled them and ticked BLOCK LOL
I am currently blocking all incomming and outgoing connection that have anything to do with P2P, File sharing, or remote control:D
You can give them a try and tweak if you use file sharing or p2p or remote connections.
To change everything back just hit the default tab and all is back to factory installed. I know this works, because I have tried it over and over.

At this point I could care less if anybody responds to my Vista Firewall questions. I don't think there is anybody here that has a clue anyway and if they do aren't speaking.
Good luck to ya all & remember, VISTA will be the next world wide OS no matter what you want or think.

Word of warning... every time I have upgrades a PC or laptop to a new Microsoft operating system, I have been disappointed.
Examples... Win 95 to 98, 98 to Me (what a disaster), 98 to XP. To be honest, the new operating system needs a new PC
