    hi community,

whew i sure learned alot, hmmm... so there ARE Norton, CA and Mcafee backers out there. looks like they aren't so bad afterall

as for me, i do have my preferences but it never occured to me to bash other AV's bec how can they have millions of satisfied users, oh well i guess everyones right about "stick to what works for you" BTW when my BD10 expires in 3 weeks, i will switch to Mcafee total sec. its gonna be my first time to try it(afraid to try before bec of all the bashing LOL) i dont care if it runs alot of processes but hasnt it occured to anyone that there might be a reason behind that issue? bec if all they wanted to do was please everyone then they would've made it lighter on all machines. i'm no expert but it seems like simple common sense though.

    i'm still learning

I purchased the new Mcafee VirusScan Plus 2007 today, installed without a glitch and runs very well on my new desktop. I really like this program. Whatever your choice, it doesn't matter, as long as it works for you.

Let me tell you my last experience about AV's.
Since Kaspersky is so highly rated by most members here at Wilders I also decided to try it.

I must say that it was a painful experience:

Not that Kaspersky is a low rate AV but it is excessively intrusive too much reactive even to system operations that are usual.
Since the beginning I was bombarded by popups, mainly about a so called riskware intruder(?) related with process intervention in other processes e.g: Windows Explorer, file manager and even Dr Watson was guilty of this.

And riskware detection seems to be disabled by default.

Finally I was unable to open the Kaspersky help file because I got a system error with the message "Run a DLL as an App has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience".

Conclusion: Kaspersky didn't stay more than 1 hour in my PC.

I think here a good initial default configuration should avoid to be too intrusive and complex and let the user learn and get acquainted to the software.

Now I'm using BitDefender 10, completely different. Lightweight of type Set and forget. Easy to understand and use. Not too much config. Perhaps not so effective like Kaspersky but with hourly update and the necessary features.

I use both NOD32 and Kaspersky however on another PC I've been using the trial version of F-Prot for the last couple of weeks and I really like this AV but I hardly ever see F-Prot being mentioned around here.

    @nunes,
infact bitdefender does have hourly updates
and can even repair itself if damaged.
after the first scan of kaspersky the pc is faster and when it loads back up after the update of network drivers the icon should load right away and the pc run quick.
but if your happy with bd 10 then thats good since thats also a great av.

I really like this AV, I plan on keeping it in my "AV arsenal".
It doesn't get mentioned with the other top AV's (NOD32, KAV, Avira) but I do believe with the upgrade to version 6 as compared to version 3.16 this will definitely be an AV to get some positive recognition especially with "Inspector Clouseau" now working with this AV.

Antivir Classic. I believe in free hardware, software, samples, and even free money. I got paid $200 just for completing an online survey a few years ago. At least my opinion was worth something. :D  :D :thumb:

One quick question about the new F-Prot 6. When I tried it in its first beta release, it didn't have pop3 (Outlook Express) e-mail scanner. There was a Outlook scanner. Does it scan pop3 e-mail now?

    this forum is biased!
doesnt Outlook Scanner mean it does still scan pop3 ?

i think AVG labels it too as outlook scanner and scans pop3 no problem, it might be the same, just labeled different.

Great topic with lots of good info.I have used Nod and Kis and still have a license for both and am very pleased with then but after all these coments i thought why not give Nis2007 a try and see how well it performs on my computer. I have to say this seems to be very good product and my computer is running great so far i have noticed no slow downs or any hicups at all i just may buy this program after the trial is over.

    hi community,

i was just about to begin my mcafee and nis 2007 trials but lo and behold, i see there is a Symantec client security program, is this the same as norton NIS? and how come no trial version, anybody uses this app? any feedback? does it use the same engine as NIS? if so, why the diff name, does this mean symantec uses diff names for its security softwares?

footnote: using mcafee total sec for a day now, runs GOOD! only complaint is the firewall leaves junk registry entries whenever i delete programs from the application control thingy.

i clean up with ACE utilities and reg mechanic but they always show up again after reboot, no big deal (shouldnt have run those reg cleaners, ignorance is bliss hehehe) but no hit on performance though.

    still learning

hello the client secuirty is meant for business and is alot lighter than the home norton versions, better gui and more configable.
also it has good self protection ive heard.
its more expensive than buying the home version.
its nice to hear that mcafee is running well for you.

I trailled kis, it's proactive defense alerted me twice about F.E.A.R being riskware invader and i allowed it to run. Too bad kis has a mind of it's own disabeling the game for me. It don't even care if i disable kis it still won't let it run lol. After kis deinstall thank God i could play fear again. I have no problem with kis only too bad it's proactive defensive is a bit too harsh. Notingh feedback can't fix but hey i was only trialling the thingh.

I am hoping F-Prot, and Dr Web improve detection rates significantly on the next AVC test.

At this point in time I see no reason to buy either when Avast Home has a better detection rate. The latest test of F-Prot was equal to Avast, but still I see no reason to choose it over Avast.

I think any of the AVs recommended here, including Dr Web and F-Prot, will give completely adequate protection. The choice comes down to what runs best for you, and the price.

    Best,
    Jerry
