I prefer Avira. It has a very high detection rate, on par with KAV's. It is also quite light on resources. I Like the interface and the GUI. And it runs very well on my computer. Its heuristics are also very strong, on par with NOD32's.

I have just started useing Dr Web. I would say that as they offer a 50% discount if you switch from another product, this is a good deal. In my opinion it is as good as Nod or Kaspersky, and a lot less expensive. Works great in the background-no problems.

    :D :D

I use Antivir classic as I like excellent Heuristics and also use Prevx1 alongside.

On wifes computer us AOL Active Virus sheild (Similare to KAV5) (reason its free and light) and Prevx1 to. Run Windows Defender on both computers as well.

    Cheers

Tried Antivir a while back, but I don't like it.
That has nothing to do with its detection rate, but rather with its user interface.
Preference I know, but that's what it's all about. :)

Also installed the F-Secure Suite which btw is included within my internet subscription. It simply kept rebooting my computer, so I even didn't get the chance to test it. :'(

Also had BitDefender installed in another snapshot, but sometimes it simply mentions that an error has occurred and the services must be stopped.
It doesn't like Counterspy 2.0 beta too, because when scanning I got a BSOD mentioning the error was due to the Bitdefender driver.

Last night I finally got the chance to install KIS and I like it. It's very light on resources. :D
Will continue the trial to see if I encounter some problems with it, but for the time being it's very stable. Do have to get used to that firewall. :D

Maybe my computer needs a clean install, so I'll be able to judge those apps a bit better without interference from previous installed software.

I never used F-Secure, but I know that it's a very good AV and has same results as Kaspersky at the AV-Comparatives tests. I know also that it can use huge ressources and is slow at ondemand scanning. I dunno if the new version has fixed those problems.

I would although recommend you NOD32 or KAV, very light and powerful, then Avira Antivir, no HTTP scanner (in both paid and free editions). Dr.Web could also be a good choice. You should test them and then take a decision.

Personnally, I am using KIS currently, as stated in my sig. It uses same ressources as NOD, but KIS also includes Firewall, AntiPhishing (...) and an AntiSpam.

I really do like Avira AntiVir and have have used it back on 98SE units. I did however recently tried one of their "alternative" freeware utilities" along with that download and it either killed my hard drive or it was going down anyway. At any rate my suspicion & the timing freaked me to the point i pulled the AV itself also. The program utility i used was NTFS4DOS and after using it i no longer could boot my hard drive. I'm not sure if alternate utilities can really be trusted or not. or coincidence, but it did happen and i'm over it.

I definitely WILL re-install AntiVir again at some point but for now i enjoy the confidence and peace BIT DEFENDER is showing me. So that's my current "other" choice, plus it integrates nicely with the HIPS SENTINEL 2.1 which is a bonus.

I read tons of POSITIVE reviews on AntiVir and i have no reason not to place trust in it. It has done remarkable for me in the past.

I prefer NOD32 for three reasons:

    1. eliminates the need for point solutions, covers all areas of malware, including rootkit detection.
    2. proactive heuristics capability
    3. system performance

I have never tried F-Secure, KAV 6 ran well on my system, but I preferred NOD32's proactive heuristics over KAV's proactive defense module.

    Another vote for NOD 32.

It's light on resources, good heuristics and if you employ Blackspears settings it becomes a set and forget AV. Heuristics and automation toghrther :)

My personal choice is Kaspersky, second on my list is NOD/Avira... both fast and good detection rate, but hate their GUI... Kaspersky's fast, good detection rate and like features such as ProactiveDefenseModule (HIPS)

If AV detects it, then its most likely KAV... renowned for its fast and frequent signature updates.

NOD's heuristics are kind-of pre-defined signatures which looks for suspicious data in a file and automatically classes it as malware automatically without the need of anyone (VirusAnalysts) to test it and add it to signatures... made so it detects some malicious files as soon as they're released (0-day malware)
... advantage of this is that its quicker at detecting malware than signature-based detection

KAV's Proactive Defense (like Behaviour Blocker/HIPS... alerts user about suspicious activity which Malicious files (viruses/adware/spyware) often do)
    http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=200880205
... advantage of this is that it has better detection

I use NOD32 because it's light and efficient. In addition to using it on my main PC, I also use it on a PC that's 5 years old with just 256MB of RAM without any trouble whatsoever.

I made full-use of the 30 day trial for both KAV and F-Secure but neither of them seemed to suit me. Both felt sluggish and I wasn't thrilled with the UI. After spending a lot of time lurking here, I decided to give NOD32 a try and was very impressed. I expected to be daunted by its UI but found it refreshing especially when I discovered just how much control you can have over the way it works on your system.

Even if you're not sure what to do, I think that Blackspear's settings will see you right and give you the confidence to use this very powerful AV.

I am using on my 2 computers KAV 6, and F-Secure AV 2007. Having tried several, those two are my preferences. If I had to settle on one, it would be KAV, but I must admit that F-Secure has been a better "Install and forget" AV than even KAV.

After those two would be NOD and Avast Home.

As can be seen from my sig, I use F-Secure on my desktop and NOD32 on my laptop. Both are excellent at what they do and here is how I made my decision between these two:

Without question, F-Secure consumes more resources than NOD32. The reason for that is because F-Secure uses 4 scanning engines (one of which btw is KAV)! If you have a fast CPU & ample RAM (as I have on my desktop) you won't notice any system performance difference between F-Secure and NOD32. However, my laptop's CPU & RAM are about half of that in my desktop, so I did notice performance degradation on my laptop from F-Secure, when compared to NOD32.

F-Secure's AV sigs update in a much more timely manner than NOD32's sigs, but there's no arguing that NOD32 is very easy on resources (if that's an issue). In the end, both AVs do a great job in accomplishing their intended purpose.

which is lighter on resources kav or nod32?

i'm more inclined towards programs which were reviewed in av-comparative

looks like a tossup between kav and nod32, might give them both a run when I've got time

thanks for all your comments and keep them coming :D

F-Secure, Kav, and NOD32 are all excellent programs. All three are reasonably light on resources and different machines react in different ways but I'd rate the drag like this:

    NOD32<KAV<F-Secure

    I'd rate performance as F-Secure>KAV>NOD32

...although NOD32 is close to equal to KAV in the real world given the advantages of heuristic protection against new threats and possibly a little better if you agree with the view that the danger lies in new threats.

Try them. I think F-Secure deserves a close look and is overlooked all too often. It is slower at scanning though (it doesn't seam to use iChecker and iSwift which would make a huge difference).

In the end all three programs give top class protection. Test them see what works best for you.
