Image Splitting

I used TI 8 to create a 7.5 GB image.

I tried burning it to a DVD+R DL disk with Nero and AVS Disc Creator, but the file was corrupt with Nero and half the actual size with AVS.

1 - Is it even possible to burn a file this size to a DL DVD?

2 - Is there any way to split this 7.5 GB file into smaller chunks?

I don't see why you can't burn it but nothing about optical media surprises me anymore.

There are two places in TI you can set the size to split archives at. First is for default options on the main screen. Tools, Options, Default backup options, Archive Splitting (something like that, you'll find it). The second place is within the backup wizard. You will come to a screen about options and you can click on Tools-> Options link and it will bring up the options similar to that from the main menu. You can then select Archive Splitting.

There are some default sizes listed or you can enter the values you want.

Edit: Misread your post If you do elect to split the existing file with some other program make sure you re-combine and test it at least with TI's verfication function to be sure it can understand it. Personally, I would re-do the backup with the file split set correctly.

 

This is important (because optical media is crap ) - and I missed it in my post . One good way to do this after you are happy that the original is good, is to take an MD5 of the image and write it in a text file (along with the file join program, and the hash program) to one of the disks.

A staged form of this is to take MD5s of both split files and compare them after writing to those on the optical media.

I cannot re-image the drive.

The best file splitter I found was within the 7-zip compression program (http://www.filehippo.com/download_7-zip/). It was fast both splitting and combining. I did mount the re-combined parts and it worked correctly. The only drawback with 7-zip is no stand-alone, automated file to re-combine the parts. The program is only around 800k, though.

I successfully burned the whole 7.5 GB file to Verbatim DVD+R DL media on a different computer with Nero. I mounted the image right from the DVD and it worked perfectly.

I must have a problem with this DVD burner.

Note that it is possible to join files back together using the copy command.

e.g. :

copy /b split.1 + split.2 rejoined.tib

Don't forget the /b switch.

Isn't there a 4GB file size limitation with that method?

 

Only if you try it on a FAT32 partition. It is fine on NTFS.
