My antivirus subscription lapses in three months time and I’m looking around for a suitable replacement. I like the idea of a full suite of programmes, antivirus, firewall, spyware scanner.

At the moment I’ve short listed three products, they are; Nod32, BitDefender, and Avira. I like the fact that Nod32 has such a great reputation, but at this stage Nod32 doesn’t have a suite product. I’ve tried both the BitDefender and Avira antivirus and much prefer the Avira look and feel.

How does BitDefender and Avira antivirus compare against Nod32? How does Avira antivirus compare against BitDefender antivirus?

Avira web site states that the suite has antispyware but looking at the manual it doesn’t appear to have a spyware scanner, could someone that runs the software clarify this point please.

My main priorities are for a very good antivirus and spyware scanner the software firewall is of secondary importance to me.

Suggestions, and advice, are most welcome.

    John.

well all three AV have great heuristics. i think antivir might be a bit better than BitDefender for detection though.

as for antvir and antispyware, its realtime component is responsible for detecting spyware as well viruses, trojans, etc. theyre not separate components.

The avira suite contains antivir premium which not only scans for viruses but adware and spyware as well. Its pretty much an all in one scanner.

Kaspersky, nod32 and antivir all do a great job. I would suggest you try the trial versions to see which one suits you better. For nod32 you can just combine it with the basic windows firewall or maybe something free like comodo.

Get Avira and something like Superantispyware free, for backup scans. Unless you dig deep into dirt on the web each day, this combo will keep you safe for a long time. You dont need 10 products to do the work of one, Avira.

here are my recommended suites, and i suggest you try the trials on all 3.

    f-secure IS 2007
    AVG IS 7.5
    norton IS 2007

if you decide on 'just an antivirus', here are my recommendations:
