I am looking for a defrager that has no background processes hogging my system resources... since I defrag on demand this is a waste of valuable resource for me... can anyone recommend a light & effective... free/or not free I dont mind.

I have tried to two (crappy) ones most recommended here on WSF but they can't be configured in a way that meets my needs (no background processes)

well I suppose you could run Diskeeper 2007 Pro Premier and turn off all automation but my might be surprised by how *light* it is when run normally.

If you run without background processing then does it really matter what you use ? even the built in windows defrag will do what's required.

I've tried all the major ones, and none have had background processes that hog system resources... DKservice.exe is using 8,380 kb mem (vm_size 4,588kb) on my machine at work with 2 physical drives (3 partitions).
You also should understand if the process is not doing anything, the pages it uses will be swapped out from physical ram to page file, the exact same reason why there is no performance gain to disabling processes (apart from OS start up time), simply put unless its badly written or buggy, should not impact on system resources or performance.

Do you need .NET for DIRMS?

I don't believe so. However, 1 of the 2 registration options does require .NET

    I say diskeeper 2007
it may have a background process but its really light and you wont notice it ever.
    read about invisitasking
    www.diskeeper.com
    www.diskeepereurope.com
i say read about it since it only ever uses resourses not in use so it wont impact on what your doing.
so if you use 100percent cpu it will stop completely
you can look at the gui and when you using alot of cpu you will notice the gui tells you its stooped and waiting for cpu not in use.

Hi, folks: If the previous posting still can not convinced you. Then my humble suggestion is to use Diskeeper Lite (free),if you do not have XP; or simply to take a full use of window XP's build-in disk defrag. No background hassle and extra light. :)

Hi, folks: I understand your feeling. But sometimes We have to make priority choices. I am not that rich either, I just could not let go a masterpiece like diskeeper pro priemier, so I skipped few dozens of Big Mac.:)

DeFraggers appear to be the app / subject of the week.

Two weeks ago I started trialing Ultimate DeFrag. Wound up purchasing it on Saturday. Sunday I saw the 50% discount off PerfectDisk, and went to my hip for that also. Two boxes w/ two defraggers... So far Ultimate Defrag gets my vote. It may not be as polished as PerfectDisk, It has a convoluted menue system, but as far as defrag options, it'sa killer. Once you discover / search out all the possible defrag methods I think you'll agree that this new app could be a real contender.:thumb:

of course, this is just my 2 cents

edit: my two other boxes have DisKeeper 9 Pro. It doesn't compare to either of the above two mentioned apps
