I bought my 36gig shortly after it was introduced. My 74gig was also one of the first ones. You are probably right as to their measured performance difference (using Sandra), but whatever the reason, it is negligable in actual use.

Fwiw, other than a couple of weeks of vacation-time, my desktop (and those Raptors) run 12 X 6 (and some weeks 12 X 7)!

I've thought about trying it a few times, or at least having a copy for software/malware testing. Just haven't found a copy of it yet. The last couple times I thought I'd found users with 2K, turned out they had ME. Most likely, when I switch operating systems, it won't be a different version of windows. Probably Linux or BSD. Meanwhile, old reliable keeps on running smoothly, 24/7.

My boot-time is less than a minute.
When I get my P4 equipped with HT technology, my boot-time will be lightning.

My PC (WinXP Pro SP2) takes about 2 minutes to boot (from start to "usage ready"), it has to load 50 processes, 32 services and 135 drivers. Without ZoneAlarm Pro it would take only 1 minute to boot.

Use ZA on all 3 of my PCs` which all are up and running in a minute or less. Do not think ZA Pro is the (only) program causing the long boot time.

Just year ago when I used Panda Titanium, my computer needed appr. 2 minutes and 46 seconds from cold to fully loaded Windows XP SP2 .

Now the same computer needs max. 39 seconds from cold to fully loaded ;)

Well it is on my new notebook. Very disappointed with ZA suite so far. It adds at least a full min to boot time- particularly in the "loading personal settings" mode.

Not sure what to do now - I am new to windows and wanted complete protection for my daughter from the crap out there.

I was bugged by how long the startup time has become on this built rig since July '04, and after reading everybody's startup times I still feel the same. Longer time than most, the same or shorter than others. 124 secs total with 45 running processes.

    From pressing the power-on button:
62 seconds to the welcome loading your settings
    80 seconds to desktop
124 secs to all system tray programs loaded and ready to go
(45 running processes in task manager)

    FX-53 @ 2.4GHz, 1GB RAM, WD740GD

Not a lot of difference between the op characteristics of the WD740 vs the WD360, though some Bmarks run faster on the 740; http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1541673,00.asp
    a second platter
Command Queuing, of undetermined success since many mobos don't support it and mixed results for those that do.

Rotary Accelerometer Feed Forward technology, that allows the drive to sense vibration and adjust its servo system for accuracy. (I don't jump on the machine while it's running anyway :) )

on either my workstation (K8W 2x244) or NAS it takes about 45 to 100 seconds just to spinup and recognize PCI IDE\SCSI drives and RAID arrays.

Then an additional 20 seconds for O&O BlueCon Beta to initiate and backup the registry

Then an additional 20 or more seconds for O&O defrag pro to look at the registry hive, MFT ect and defrag as necessary skipping after it loads will shave maybe ten seconds

then the firewall and security scripts run maybe another 10 - 15 seconds
then my logging on with a 32 character upper & lower case alphanumeric + symbol password and its time to play :p

of course there is still an additional wait to load startup aps of maybe 20 sec

30-60 i think, to get into windows. Maybe 20 secs for the welcome. It could be longer, but i don't think so. I'll time it next time if i remember.

Approximately 35 seconds to shell display, i use high-powered defrag plus bootvis and a start-up organizer that comes with RegRun Reanimator!

Engages a nice swift start to any new sessions.

i finally timed my Vista setup and the results aint pretty:

    boot > welcome screen: 1:45s
boot > desktop (everything loaded): 2:40s

    obviously theres room for improvement.

Vista altered with vLite, most services disabled, 18 processes running when booting is finished.
Boot to Welcome: 50 sec | Boot to Desktop: 1 min 15 sec (CCleaner holds it for about 10 sec).

This one was tricky, since (a) I never bothered timing it, and (b) Farstone's Restore-IT kicks in immediately after the POST screen and takes maybe 15 secs on its own. Plus what did you mean by "boot" time, till ready to use?

I voted less than 30 secs (Celeron 2.2, 256 megs) to the desktop, although another 20-30 secs to get all services and startup items going and ready to use.

    @ ThunderZ

After installing a newer version of ZA Pro and with everything except the firewall turned off, I have cut my boot-time from 2 minutes to about 1 minute and 10 seconds, not bad. :thumb:

Glad to hear. That, IMO, is a respectable boot time. I am a tweaker by nature, do a Google for speeding up XP start up time. There is a load of information out there. I do recommend doing only 1 tweak at a time then use your PC for a while to see if it has helped and did not break anything. Be aware that there are tweaks out there that really do nothing or may cause more damage then good. Also, I do not know the specs. of your PC. Hardware plays a factor as well in the start up time.
