Re: Last build forTI 9, a proposed solution

Few folkes are likely to find enough changes in 10 to warrant upgrading extant syststems. Few sales would be lost.

The 11 upgrade code could distinguish between purchasers of 10 and those that got the special upgrade to 10.

no software of a general nature will ever be fixed and complete.

This is a purely subjective comment. I was making a point of principle.

I think your idea of minimising development costs has just started unravelling.

Another purely subjective comment. You can't suggest that without understanding the expectations of the user.

I'm truly bored with this discussion now Howard. It is going nowhere.

Nonsense Howard!! That's just a lame excuse for inadequate programing and poor Quality Assurance. Anyway, why should our expectations for software that is "Fit for Purpose" be different to any other product?

    Hi Aleksandr,
    That's great news.
I'm very happy that Acronis has decided to take seriously the concerns expressed in this thread.
I hope that the build will fix the various problems which have been highlighted by Menorcaman and others in this thread.
Perhaps you could consider approaching these users and asking if they wished to participate in beta testing of this last build.
I'm sure you'd get some takers and the result would be a final release of a product worthy of the tagline "Compute with confidence".
It would certainly restore my confidence in Acronis.

    Acronis Support,

That's good news. Could you please include a detailed change log with this final build, so that we'll know which issues have been addressed and resolved? This might at least head off some critiques of issues that may not be seen by you as relevant, and help foster a sense of partnership between Acronis and your forum members and customers, who, on the whole, are rooting for the success of this program. Any efforts you make to rebuild bridges now will go a long way towards mending any ill will that may have crept in during this waiting period.

    Tachyon42,

You raise an excellent point. While I am pleased that Acronis has decided to make another attempt at fixing the outstanding problems with V 9, I agree that it might also be a good idea to run a beta test with at least a few of those here who understand the problems. I'm sure the forum members will subject this build to a very close scrutiny upon release, and would love nothing better than to report it as a resounding success!

    Good work, all.

If version 9.0 has known problems that were fixed in version 10.0 and not fixed in the final build of version 9.0, it will be reasonable for Acronis to provide free upgrade. Like for example with SATA problems some users have, if version 10.0 already contains the fix, than it is easy to provide version 10.0 rather than add the fix to version 9.0 (which is outdated).

If version 9.0 should do something (as documented) but doesn't because of some bugs fixed in version 10.0, what for to deal with old version?

I think this is reasonable point.

    Hi Kento,

TI 10.0 contains a number of additional features that I wouldn't expect to receive at no additional cost. The point is, TI 9.0 Home Build 3677 contains a number of generic bugs that are hardware-independent and which should have been ironed out prior to moving on to TI 10.0. These (hopefully) will now be fixed via the forthcoming final update.

The SATA problem you refer to only manifests itself on certain hardware configurations. I, personally, do not expect Acronis to update a particular version of TI ad infinitum in order to cater for every new combination of rapidly advancing technology; there has to be a cut-off point at some stage.

    Regards

Also version 10 is of no use to win98se users. ( yes there are some of us out there).
I am glad to hear they are planning to fix version 9!!

I have been away for a few days and only seen the good news today, without detracting from the decision to provide one last build of version 9, I wonder how much influence the loss of several of the more knowledgeable unpaid beta testers and support personnel on this forum had in persuading the top dogs at Acronis.

Re: Last build forTI 9, a proposed solution

It might be what some people expect. But from a scientific point of view, providing a product is not flawed at the design stage there really is no reason (apart from spending the effort on shaking out the problems) that it cannot do exactly what it is supposed to.

I find the the general acceptance by some that software is a bit mysterious, and too difficult to get right and that's just the way it is, a view which sits happily with medieval witchcraft, superstition and all things non-scientific.

Software design *is* an exact science. It *will* work if producers design up front and do not rush the final product out without a proper quality structure in place. If you don't believe this just look at the aerospace industries. These are mission critical applications with scores of software driven subsystems, many of which have to interact and which are often outsourced to different development comapnies. Why is it that aeroplanes don't fall out of the sky, that we can put a fighter aircraft on autopilot and let it land itself, why is it that there isn't an air traffic control disaster reported on the news every evening. These systems all rely on software - that works.

The difference, is that the producers care enough about the quality. Software is not a mysterious black art, but those who cut corners might tell you that it is.

In theory, yes, but in practice, no, and it is practice that counts.

If users really knew what went on in software development, they would be quite shocked. I expect that there would be a revolution.

It's a fact of life that various stages in the software development process are not properly done and proper software QA procedures, even if in place, get bypassed for "time to market", etc. reasons.

I'm well aware what happens in practice, what I was saying was that there is little justification for it. Things don't have to be this bad. People rolling over and accepting them as the norm (as you are doing) does not help.

Do you have a Master's degree in subjectivity ? Let's try to stick to facts, rather than getting all emotional and subjective.

It's not a fact of life. It is the way things happen because people can't be bothered to do any better.

With Howard's posts about the theories of software development, plus other comments seem to be steering this topic in a strange direction. The title of this thread in all it's length is "Will there be more updates to TI9 Home? No more, no less.

This is the question, and Acronis has finally posted they will update this version. Why all this chatter now? Only thing that should be an issue is when is Acronis making this upgraded version available. At that time, we will see what has been made 'right' with v.9. Then all the comments, criticisms, and software theories can flow forth.

Is all this hashing of the objectives of software development contributing anything to this threads topic? I can find none as hard as I try. I say we stay focused on the topic, and that is to wait for the corrected version 9 to be issued, and then we will have the answers, not before.

The length of time it takes for an update to 9,0 to be posted is probably dependent on whether these issues were fixed in v 10. However, reading the problems on this forum re: v10, shows me that they have introduced many new problems with the new features (example: Outlook backup), but I don't have a feel for whether the new features (introduced in v9) that didn't work in v9 actually work in v10. My greatest hope from this thread is that Acronis finally realizes that when they release a new product it should perform as advertised not just as marketing spin. That is why the posts on marketing development are highly relevant to this thread. Acronis has lots of people on this forum ready willing and able to test new versions so that they will perform as advertised. Their reputation as a software developer/manufacturer depends on it.

    Just a thought...

Not wanting to be "buzz kill" or anything but if Acronis took this long to decide whether to continue to make one last rev to TI9, how long before they release it?

Obviously, this is not a high priority for them and while they have acknowledged they will proceed with doing it, any bets on how long before they deliver?

I was wondering if anyone has been asked to beta test this new update?

    Not that I'm aware of.

I'm thinking that they might release the update around the same time they release the update for v10. - So I'm betting on either just before Christmas or mid January, assuming that Acronis will celebrate Orthodox Christmas and New Year rather than the Western one.

A non disclosure agreement would prevent some one from discussing specific details of any testing.
But do they prevent someone from acknowledging that they are a beta tester?
