As Suites go...

I have always run just a firewall and antivirus program for security. This has always worked well for me and I saw no reason for change (if it's not broke, don't fix it), out of curiosity, I decided to try the new AVG 7.5 Internet Security Suite and I must say, suites have come a long way since the last time I tried one, download and installation was quick and easy, running at default settings would seem adequate for most users (I've tweaked mine). I am really surprized at the resource usage, it uses about 44 MB of RAM on my system and there is no noticable impact on performance whatsoever, I mean none, it feels lighter on my system than KAV 6 and Dr.Web did, and they both ran extremely light on my laptop. AVG 7.5 performance on my laptop is unbelievable. I have always liked the AVG interface, the new interface is even nicer, it's clean, sharp, simple to use and very easy to understand, atleast for me, and having used the Windows firewall for the past three years with no problems, I find the AVG firewall a refreshing change, it has a nice layout, very easy to understand and configure, with good application control and logging features. I also like the way they integrated ewido (Anti-Spyware) into the scanner and real time monitor, this definitely enhances the protection level. The Anti-Spam module is also a nice extra (believe it or not, I've never had a spam problem), it was very easy to set up for Outlook Express, now if I could just get some spam to test it, just kidding...

Anyway, my experience running this has been very positive. I like it. I have never been a "suite" kind of a guy, until now, now I seem to like the all in one concept when I think about compatability issues and conflicts between different security softwares, performance hit when running multiple applications, the hassle of updating and scanning with different programs, also, the cost of separate programs and keeping up with all the licenses and renewals makes the suite approach even more appealing. I think AVG products as a whole have been improving steadily in performance, protection and usability. I must say, I am very impressed with this product, and personally, I cannot find anything that would keep me from purchasing a license, which I might add, is very reasonable as compared to other suites on the market. This suite is a must try for anyone who would like a simple, easy to use and effective security application.

kinda hard work reading all that when i still havnt fully recovered from last night, and still have that 'blurry vision', but i did manage it, just slowly.

yeah it is good software and the performance on the system is super, was the first thing i noticed, especially boot times.

 

I agree C.S.J, boot times are quick, loads in no time. It continues to amaze me how smooth this program runs, everything in perfect harmony. I like it.

i mean no antispam is perfect, far from it... but it moves most to the folder i set up in outlook express, more than other suites i had tried, i just laugh when people moan because it has 'avgs interface', erm ... well it is avg.

 

I use a local ISP, they keep a tight lid on spam, I have never had this problem, but I set up a spam folder in my Outlook Express, just in case.

I like the AVG interface, always have, it's easily navigated and everything you need is right there, you don't have to go hunting everywhere for some obscure option or setting.

 

Have their been any new tests done on the 7.5 version's detection rates yet?
I admit to using the AV in the past--no problems.... But got scared away when I went to av-comparatives!! I use KIS6 now, but from a price point the AVG suite looks sweet!!!!

AVG meets the industrial standards that mean the most to me, Virus Bulletin 100% award, ICSA Labs certified, Checkmark certified Antivirus Level 1, Antivirus Level 2 and Trojan, as do many other antivirus solutions. As for independent tests such as av-comparatives, it scores a standard, which says to me, it makes the mark, it's a cut above the rest that don't qualify to be tested, or want to be tested, this is how I interpret tests of this nature. I am not driven by numbers or percentages. I think any of the antivirus programs represented and tested at av-comparatives would be a good choice, as always, personal preference, system compatability, likes and dislikes about a particular software, play an intergal part in choosing the right solution for you. However, I do look forward to the next round of av-comparatives tests for AVG 7.5, curiosity is getting the best of me

 

Good points made, but as my signature suggests --- the search for security will fill one with insecurity, from some test sites reviews and forum threads as well.. The real problem is that we need prevention more than detection!!
Can I purchase that in a suite? Oh sure there are apps that throw cryptic pop ups whether or not to allow some process... blah blah blah...
My head hurts now, where are my pills?

No truer words have been spoken "the search for security will fill one with insecurity" I like that Years ago, I got caught up in all that securing your computer stuff and trying every new program that came down the pipeline. It will drive you crazy, and broke, not to say paranoid. That's what security newsgroups tend to do to some people that become so consumed with securing their computer from every threat imaginable. It's impossible. If something gets by my current protection, I don't blame the vendor or his software like some people do, then go out and download something else that they percieve to be better, that's ludicrous, I just identify the problem, resolve it if I can or download the necessary tools, fix it and move on, this has helped me retain my sanity over the years and have less headaches. Now I enjoy my computer and the internet, instead of being a slave to computer security applications, but many thanks to the security guru's and geeks out there, that eat, sleep and breathe computer security. Their expertise has helped me many times over the years.

 

I guess I am caught up in the rat race for perfect security!! My test pc is so loaded up with security apps, that I can barely use the thing... I think I will wipe it out and try the AVG suite!! I am also curious about the coming NOD32 suite... Ooops, there I go again......

 

We've all been there, some still are, remember, there is no perfect solution and the person behind the keyboard is the first line of defense, all other measures are secondary.

 

10-4!! Downloading it as I type, I'll give it 30 days to see how I like it. It will be hard to unseat my feelings about KIS6 though!! Just to give some history, I used Norton 2003-2005 always upgrading to the latest versions. OH MY GOD WHAT A MESS!! That is when I used AVG free to clean up what Norton missed!! But it seems like AVG is on the same road as Ad-aware---on the way out. This new version may put it back in its place?? I hope!!

 

I just finished a trial run of KAV 6, it ran really well on my laptop. There's just something about Kaspersky I don't like, can't put my finger on it, anyway, I was a happy Dr.Web user, then I started pondering the suite concept as opposed to point solutions. AVG Internet Security, has changed my way of thinking and protecting my computer.

 

So are you going to stop using Dr Web and buy AVG now?

 

With Kas, its called old age, real fast. Cant explain it either, but your PC will slow down considerably as time goes by.

 

The Spider is back!

 

I like the Spider to, will put it back on the laptop. It really is a hell of a AV.

 

Evidently it runs well on most machines. However, I see no reason to choose it as detection rates are pretty mediocre. Why pay for it when Avst Home has better detection?

When it comes down to it, I have an AV to protect, that is to detect malware. I realize it must run with other applications on the machine, but as long as it does that, detection is the primary requirement along with cost. Dr Web just does not show that much.

Dr.Web's performance and protection, are second to none, in my opinion, big difference between laboratory tests and real world enviroment.

 

Thank goodness, I was afraid you were going to abandon the good Doctor. A scolding was just around the corner. Just kidding, after all I currently am trialing Panda AV 2007 on my work laptop. My home box still has the Spider guarding it of course..

 

What antispyware and firewall apps are some of you using with Dr. Web? Thanks. As for now, I am using Avira suite and it is running fine on my laptop. Don't know if I will renew my NOD32 license and may try AVG suite again because I did like the way my machine ran when I tried it before.

I'm using BOClean, got it when they had the special 25 buck deal a month ago, really great software and light as a feather. DrWEB does spyware & Malware scanning also as part of its detection package. I don't run a firewall right now but use a Linksys router along with AppDefend...
