I just looked at MajorGeeks.com and made my own list of the best rated av:s, when at least 30 reviews were done. The biggest rating was 5, here is the list.

    Shareware:

    4.93 (806 votes) - McAfee VirusScan 10 - [2005-08-19]

Maybe it is still more important that how many were bothered to evaluate the product. Still a bit confused how low many "Advanced +" scored products in Av-Comparatives were actually ranked among customers in here.

    Best regards,
    Firefighter!

Btw, AntiVir PE Classic were downloaded 1736563 times. Avast Home only 231827 times. F-Prot beta an other positive surprise for me in the rank. Inspector Clouseau an other good salesman? ;) But McAfee? Have all the relatives of Solo av-vendor marketing department voted as well? :doubt:

Not meaning to drift too far off topic, but this kind of comparison seems similar to the current count of McDonalds hamburgers sold.

I love open-source software, but I think ClamAV did not deserve that ranking when compared to other choices; freebies or not.

I think Active Virus Shield does yet have quite the recognition as the other freebies, otherwise it should have the highest score amongst freebies. AntiVir PE has great detections but 'feels' too limited, too much like a freebie. Active Virus Shield doesn't have anything to 'upgrade' to. It doesn't suggest purchasing a professional version or anything like that. It looks, acts and performs exactly like a paid antivirus. Updates are hourly, and 'smooth' I must say.

Although this type of comparison may not be accurate, it does have meaning to it. For example, before going to a movie theatre or buying a video game I would always check user ratings. Ratings by hundreds or thousands of people put together into one rating has a lot of meaning to it. Similar to going on vacation, I always check ratings at TripAdvisor before making any purchases.

Thank you Firefighter for taking your time to compile this list. We appreciate this. And as hinted by ronjor, a list of 'number of downloads' per AV program might also show popularity as well.

    Cheers,
    Dave

I'm a bit confused why people ranked so many real good detection rate av:s so low? Do those best ranked av:s offer free Hamburgers as well? :doubt:

    Best regards,
    Firefighter!

This kind of comparisons have nothing to do with detection rate but to usability and marketing, it's an important issue.

Although there were a few solutions more downloaded than from MajorGeeks, still quite few evaluations. :doubt:

    Best regards,
    Firefighter!

Btw, how NOD and Kaspersky users can be so different in an other site? :doubt:

The McAfee ratings must have come before the most recent version.

I used to be a fan too.

It looks like I chose the top programs in both the free and pay categories as tabulated on MajorGeeks.com. :D

Look at the date in the end of the av name, it's dated on 2005-08-19.

Million and three/quarter, is that just from 'MajorGeeks'o_O?

AVIRA's Download site lists MajorGeeks.com among the 'Mirror' sites at the top of their page,
but there have been so many problems reported on AntiVir Forum related to 'mirror download'
(I got one unusable {mirror} "DEMO" download once),
what would be a 'Total' from all sites? (for AntiVir)
