that is just it, there isnt a better choice. There are about 6 AVs that will give you the protection you need and it really doesnt matter which you go with, as long as you go with, one.:D

I'd go for BitDefender. Google for it and you'll find specials and discounts for it. Got my dad on it and it's a pretty similar situation :)

I recommend AVG free. Imo, the lightest and easiest to use av.

Just had to do the same for my mum in law. I have now used AVG free and Prevx with Windows FW. She does not surf unsafe areas and this set up gives 0 pop ups and updates automatically.

In regards to that setup link:
I don't understand why you would want to UNcheck the program module/components upgrade feature?

There's always this "Trust-issue" with me which I can't shake.

This one is offered by...uh...AOL. Not too sure about this. :ninja:

AVG free does have automatic updates, it just doesn't have high speed updates.

After all is said and done, AVG free is the best for Mom. If you want to do maintenance every so often, then get AVG 7.5 AS free, and scan once in a while. Use the Windows firewall, and she will be just fine.

Dont make your Mom go frantic with popups and alerts by other antivirus, firewall, or HIPS.

Just make sure that your PC is clean before you allow her to use it. Then install Avira PE classic and ghostwall. Although ghostwall will only protect the PC from outside attacks, this will decrease program alerts that an HIPS or a firewall with outbound control may initiate.

With this setup, your PC is friendly enough for your mom as well as protected against threats...
