What antivirus, do the, "Pros" use.

Kaspersky on my computer, Networked my roommate's pc just today and installed NOD32 on it

After trialing both, I slightly tend to prefer Kaspersky though both are great... and Nod seems to be more of a install and let it work type antivirus compared to Kaspersky and he's not as computer savvy as I am

 

If those "Pros" among av-industry are using av:s at all, they just can't use free av:s, because their credibility suffers. What do those customers think, when even AVG is capable to detect trojans better than such big names as McAfee, Panda, DrWeb, TrendMicro, F-Prot, Sophos etc? Finally, free AVIRA AntiVir is capable to beat in practice all payable av:s.

I'm currently trialing Avast! Pro - but I'm beginning to wonder why its seldom discussed or mentioned in these forums. Is it that 'bad' ? I admit, it does start several processess and some folks don't like the idea it would appear, but those combined are no worse than some other av's I've been trialing as well.

I'm really leaning toward Antivir but the update window and stopping of the GUI is intrusive when others just update quietly for the most part. Also, Antivir has the annoying (to me anyhow) issue of logging all the starts/stops/updates in the 'Event' Manager, filling up the log file that has to be sorted thru when checking on other 'events' on the system. Antivir logs the same info in their own logs, so to me its not needed. The main reason I dumped NAV, they too started dumping all the checks for updates into the 'Event' logs. Avast! has created their own 'Antivirus' log in the Event Manager, so at least you don't have to wade thru a but of other logs.

KAV slows my system down too much, and turning 'off' features to speed it up, not to mention the compatablity issues with Outpost Firewall, is not the answer when its so expensive. Why pay that much, just to disable parts of the AV?

Avast isn't a bad choice.It may not be the most popular a/v,but that doesn't mean much.
Are you leaning toward AntiVir Premium?
That may be a good choice as well.

 

Yes I am. Waiting to see how much longer until they integrate HTTP scanning.

(I think that's the right term) Still trying to learn this stuff, but its hard for an old guy to pick up.

You can also keep a close eye on DrWeb and F-Prot, these are the top 4 IMHO

All are missing too much to be THE BEST. There is NO such thing, you'd need to use all four of the above to get good coverage from the persistent attackers.

NOD32 doing VERY well on some Small variants, and beating them senseless against TrojanDownloader BUSKY. So its the only ONE single I could recommend at the moment if you beat me down to one.

 

PS - I do NOT use AV for protection.

I use ProcessGuard, firewall and commonsense.

 

I use avast ( got any problem with that?), with a few other security progs and Geswall & PG as HIPS with windows xp restrictions here and there, + my own knowledge and common sense.

I was wondering if hackers use AV protection.

 

Using Kaspersky Antivirus 6.0 as part of its Internet Security Suite trial.

 

I just swithed yesterday to NAV 2007 to give it a try, a nice program indeed, has really changed for the better, since I last used NAV 2003.

 

I think "Real Pros" (hackers or whatever you call) don't use any antivirus to protect their machine.

I don't think it matters if you are a pro or not not when it comes to computer security (except for people who write security programs of course).
I'd say I'm a regular internet user and am concerned about the potential threats that are, alas, everywhere.

I'm also quite conservative and loyal: I don't change applications if they're doing their job. Symantec deeply disappointed me, changed to Kaspersky and was given a blacklisted license (paid good money for it) they wouldn't rectify, and finally bought NOD32. It's been exactly a year and with no problems whatsoever.

 

This newpro doesn't use any scanners anymore. Scanners can be disabled by malwares.

The only one I always keep coming back to is:

NOD32

Even with it's pros and cons (cons I personally consider relatively minor).

BTW, I'm not a pro, but I have read Wilders extensively, follow the security scene and have trialled quite a few anti-virus software. TFWIW.

 

Not a AV-pro but a Dutch guy in IT since 1980 I use cheap aps as security

Because my processor facilitates it, I have DEP enabled for all programs in XP Home (cheapiest memory protection within XP).

My ADSL supplier scans my e-mails as an free service

No anti spy, No outbound software firewall only hardware inbound firewall

A external harddrive for backup restore and off course a cheap solution for image copy of my C drive (Bart's PE with DiveImageXML) and the free syncback for backup/restore of my Data drive.

Conclusion security can be cheap

 

I recently tried out Antivir PE Classic this week and it's still installed in my laptop and i cant believe this antivirus is free. Having tried the free versions AVG and Avast and i must say i like Antivir better than those two.

Have also tried KAV6 and NOD32 but between the two i like NOD32 better. It's Low on resources, Fast Scanner and Great Heuristics. Just great protection. Its something i really recommend to those who ask me what Antivirus they should use.
