I can't install a brand new Photosmart D5100 printer (drivers only, not the whole bloated package!). Recurrent error message: 'Has not passed the Windows logo testing for compatibility with XP.' Followed fairly swiftly by 'Cannot install this hardware'. Have tried the 'install anyway' options but to no avail.
Have succeeded in reinstalling my old deskjet 3650 (drivers only) following same error messages, but 'preferences' does not respond, so I'm stuck with 'normal' & 'plain paper'.
The D5100 & installation software works fine. I took it back to PCWorld & they had it up & running very quickly, installing drivers only.
Any suggestions in very non-tech language please.

Would it help to disable 'Integrated Windows Authentication'?
Just thought I'd ask...probably no one reading this...feeling very neglected lately...;)

I solved the problem by exchanging the HP for a Canon. All installed & working beautifully!

The forum looks a bit lazy,...
Are you installing the latest drivers for the printer from HP? The error message is indicating that the driver has not undergone compatibility testing and signing by Microsoft for maximum compatibility with Windows XP.

Oh well, anyway your problem is solved. Quite funny that this thread is ignored.

So sorry, haven't been here in some time  . New job removes PC hours from my schedule.

HP printers and cameras are often a pain to install on Window's platforms, especially on HP/Compaq PCs. Preloaded Hp drivers can interfere with installation. Also, Vista readiness program shows incompatability with some HP drivers.
The program disks that come with HP printers have an option to remove old printer drivers before installation but they are often inneffective. It may be necessary to download your model's drivers and HP Scrubber from HP/Compaq downloads site. Follow directions found there and run the scrubber before installing your printer or camera.

It is wise to save those drivers, updates and forgettable installation instructions to cd, in the event that you have to reinstall later.

Hope this helps someone. :-* Crickette

With the Canon installed & working well & the old HP confined to the shed in the garden, my feeling is to leave well alone & not use up any more of my or your time pursuing this issue further. However, should I remove the old printer from my machine (& how would I do that?) or is that best left alone too?
Much appreciate the input from those of you who took the trouble to post & yes, nadirah, I agree, difficult to understand the muted response.:doubt:
