My disk defrag (windows xp pro) is broken and I wish to have it. I can do a complete recovery from the last good archive I have, or I can do a clean install. Neither of these is an attractive option as the recovery takes about two hours (I know BartPe) don't have it and too labor intensive to get it. Is there a quick fix to reinstalling disk defrago_O?

    Thanks

If this did not get broken too long ago you could roll your system back using Windows system restore. If this is not a solution you could run the Windows system file checker (sfc scanow) which should get things back to normal. You will need your Xp installation disk to hand for this process, a slipstreamed version with your latest SP staus would be a help. The third method would be to do a repair install over the existing installation. In this event you would have to re-run Windows updates.

You could of course give up and download a third party defragger. There are some free ones that work.

Sorry about that, I had assumed that you would have an XP installation disk available. I presume you don't have a Windows restore point to roll back to when the defragger was working. However despair not, have a read here :-

to see if this will help.

Thanks Xpilot.......excellent site, however didn't help me....same prob...and the weird part is when i go into defrag there are no files under "Files that did not defragment." Additionally, on viewing the volume information I get 172 in "Total excess fragments." I believe this should read 0.

Thought perhaps this might help. The following link is to the Diskeeper FAQ site and may apply to your situation. Finding the appropriate information requires some looking and as such I have inserted the info I found appropriate below the link.
    http://support.diskeeper.com/support/diskeeperfaqs.aspx?Page=5&Subpage=2&cust=1&RId=1&CId=1&SId=2

The Default (built-in) defragmenter does not return or function after uninstalling Diskeeper on Windows 2000/XP.

The uninstaller may not have restored the default defragmentation registry entry. Please use the steps below.

Note: in line 5, the string starts with C:. If you have Windows installed to a different partition, replace C with the letter of that partition.

Before you begin any editing of the registry, always remember to update your emergency repair disk (ERD).

    1. Click Start, Run. Type "regedit" in the text box and click OK.
    2. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, double click SOFTWARE, then Microsoft, then Windows, then CurrentVersion, then Explorer, then MyComputer
    3. Click DefragPath
    4. In the right-hand pane, double click (Default). This will bring up and Edit String window.
5a. For Windows XP: Change the string to read "mmc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dfrg.msc %c:" and click OK.
5b. For Windows 2000: Change the string to read "C:\WINNT\system32\dfrg.msc %c:".

Please Note: You may have your Windows 2000 or XP operating system installed to a different directory from the default of C:\WINNT (for 2000) C:\Windows (for XP). If so, modify the command above to reflect that correct directory location.

Please Note: The difference between the two lines above is that the Windows XP string begins with "mmc.exe", and the Windows 2000 string does not.

    6. Close the registry.
    7. Open the Command Prompt; To open the command prompt, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
    8. Type "CD \WINDOWS\system32" and press Enter. (the Note above applies here also)
    9. Type "Regsvr32.exe DfrgSnap.dll" and press Enter.
    10. A window will appear confirming the success of the registration; select OK.

You should then be able to use the included default defragmenter in Windows 2000 or XP.

Now select START\PROGRAMS\ACCESSORIES\SYSTEMTOOLS and right click on DISKDEFRAGMENTER, then click Properties. Change the Target box to:%systemroot%\System32\dfrg.msc

WOW........gulp........should I do all of the above, cause I did NOT install diskeeper or any other utility. This all started when I downloaded ms messenger 8 which I promptly removed and got a new restore pt, but still this problem remains. Thanks for your response and help.

You may not have installed Diskeeper but somehow things got messed up. It appeared to me that it might correct matters. It also depends on how comfortable you are with working with the Registry. With being in this newsgroup I assume that you have already created a TrueImage backup file, something.tib, that you can restore if something goes wrong. If it was me I would 'walk' through the Registry and look at the points mentioned to see what you can learn. Another source might be a site hosted by Doug Knox, Microsoft MVP. I haven't checked that but will do if I have time. Doug has many scripts that fix problems such as this. If I find something I'll post back.

I appreciate your help and yes I do have a backup (full), however I do not have BartPe so my restores take over 2 hrs, consequently I am reluctant to mess around too much for fear of having to restore......gotta work on Bart so I'm not so reluctant to screw up and be able to restore quickly. Thanks for your input and help. If you come up with anything I surely will try it, even if it means a restore.

    Hello all,

Thank you for using Acronis Backup Software

Actually we rather recommend you to contact Mocrosoft Support Team to know what exactly files should be restored from an image to get back a disk defragmenter. If you know it you may restore them from an image separately.

    Thank you

I'm running XP Pro on my second machine and the defrag feature went south. It would start but would die soon after. I found that running it in "safe mode" worked for me, defraged completely.

Tried that same bad result.......defrag died. I have subsequently restored and all seems well most of the time with defrag. It does sometimes not restore to some of my restore points so there is still a prob, but I will live with it until I have to do a new clean install. The thought of that is much worse than living with a temperamental disk defrag.

    Hello Max0071,

Out of interest, please advise the total size and free space of the hard drive you are defragging.

Also go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information and cut-n-paste your results for the following into your reply:

    Total Physical Memory 1,024.00 MB
    Available Physical Memory 585.29 MB
    Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
    Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB
    Page File Space 2.41 GB
    Page File D:\pagefile.sys

    Regards

    Max0071,
You just got that Toshiba notebook about a Month ago ...right? I'm thinking it should've came with a series of discs that will Restore it to the day you first turned it on. If it did, you could try using those Discs to Restore your system.

    Page File C:\pagefile.sys

startsfan.....yea I could use my recovery disk to get my defrag to work, but then I would have to manually reinstall all my data, programs, xp pro "upgrade" and settings......defeats the purpose of ATI and very time consuming.....I guess the other solution is to put in my windows xp pro "upgrade" and do the repair thing, but I'm not sure this would reapair my defrag or my system restore.

Menorcaman I have placed your request above.....thanks to you both.

The other problem that just reared its ugly head is system restore. I seems that if I try a restore point that is more than two days old .......restore Incomplete, however, if I try a restore point I just created say a few hours ago, it does restore....so both my system restore and defrag are playing games with me. So I may take up starsfans suggestion and do a clean install and then mount my image and drag and drop and go thru everything I tried to avoid. Once again thanks for your interest. I thought to use a restore point and thereby get my disk defrag back but that didn't work cause I couldn't go back far enough to get a valid restore point.

So I did a recovery of my image that fixed the defrag but still have my restore issue. This time it only took me one hour to do a restore (I know BartPE), but an hour ain't so bad.

Thanks max0071 but what's the answer to my first question i.e. total size and free space of the hard drive?

Regarding the System Restore problem, how much of your hard drive(s) space have you allocated to system restore (Control Panel > System > System Restore > Settings) ? Also thought it might be worth hilighting the following statement in the Windows XP Help file:

    Sorry Menorcaman......free space=100gb........used space=11gb.

The amount allocated to System Restore is at the max of 12% (13736MB)

I will turn System Restore on and off and then create a new restore point and wait a couple of days to see if this solves my problem. Once again thanks again for your always good advice.

    Regards
